What you will do: 

Electra is seeking a dynamic Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong mechanical design, fabrication, and experimentation background. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will focus on designing, building, and testing nascent electrochemical hardware to inform product development. They will report learnings and recommendations to stakeholders confidently. The successful candidate will answer critical electrochemical, design, and techno-economic questions and push Electra toward technical and financial viability. In this role, you will: 

• Design and continuously improve electrochemical cells and test systems.
• Design robust sealing methods for electrochemical cells and stacks with flowing electrolyte
• Perform ex-situ testing of electrochemical cell components for iterative performance, cost, and durability improvements.
• Perform validation testing, simulation, and performance/cost modeling of electrochemical cells and stacks.
• Utilize CAD to prepare detailed drawings for components manufactured in-house and outside vendors.
• Reads, understands and complies with all workplace health and safety policies, safe work practices, and company policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

What we need you to bring to the team: 

• BS in Mechanical Engineering
• 5 years’ experience in a Mechanical Engineering Design role.
• Excellent project management skills and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Effective communication skills and a demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally and mentor more junior level employees.
• Ability to think critically and overcome challenges with a results-oriented mindset.
• Proven proficiency in CAD (preferably SolidWorks) for mechanical design, documentation, and fabrication.
• Working knowledge of quality principles, tolerancing guidelines, and design standards (ASME 14.5) and a willingness to adapt to internal design practices
• Understanding of or willingness to learn fundamental electrochemical principals
• A hands-on mentality and experience prototyping with common machine and hand tools to adapt, refine, and innovate designs

• Candidates with knowledge of large and complex industrial or chemical systems and the intricacies of the equipment they utilize
• Experience using modeling tools such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA)
• Experience with DFM and NPI methodologies to ensure novel prototypes have pathways to scalable products
• Experience designing with materials for aggressive media or corrosive liquids
• Experience in flow battery, electrolyzer, or fuel cell design
• Hands on experience in design validation and ASTM testing standards.
• Experience with Python for simulation and data analysis
• Understanding of Design for Experiments best practices

Compensation:  

• The anticipated starting pay range for this position is $105,000-$130,000 annually and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.
