Summary
Researches, proposes, designs, implements, tests, and documents electrical and electro-mechanical hardware for products and systems. Conducts analytical studies on engineering proposals and applies knowledge of scientific and engineering principles to develop designs for products. Exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of engineering projects within area of assigned responsibility. May act as lead on projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Analyzes system design proposals, product requirements, and specifications to determine feasibility of design or application in conjunction with estimating development time, budget, and unit cost.
Researches, analyzes, and recommends product system architecture, including platforms for electronic hardware and firmware, which map to product requirements.
Keeps informed of appropriate or emerging technologies and drives development and implementation of best practices that help achieve company objectives.
Designs, analyzes, tests, and debugs electrical and electro-mechanical components and subsystems; from initial concept development through transition to production. Activities include analog and digital circuit design, integration of microprocessors and microcontrollers, schematic and BOM output, PCB layout, and system-level design.
Selects appropriate prototyping approach and methods to best meet overall project needs and milestones; such as for system evaluation, design and formal testing, trade shows, etc.
Selects and recommends applicable electronic hardware manufacturing processes and suppliers based on expected production volume, tooling cost, impact on parts cost, and other quality system guidelines.
Manages technical interactions with suppliers for specific electronic hardware under development, from initial feedback on design for manufacturability through production tooling, first articles, and at least initial production run.
Designs and executes test protocols and experiments to verify and validate designs, documenting results appropriately in reports.
Documents development activities and deliverables consistent with formal Quality Systems; including definition of product requirements, project planning, design output (production drawings, bills of materials, procedures, specifications, inspection criteria, etc.), design review, design verification and validation, control of design changes, and risk analysis.
Plans, formulates, implements, and manages engineering program for assigned scope according to project requirements, and quality and regulatory standards.
Coordinates activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems.
Coordinates and manages activities with internal and external project stakeholders throughout the design and development process, including transition to production.
Communicates project status, major issues / mitigations, etc. to engineering management, other project stakeholders, and executive management.
Provides technical support, as needed, for manufacturing engineering, production, purchasing, service, and quality assurance.
Assists with related special projects, as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree (B.S.) or higher in Electrical or Computer Engineering, or equivalent
At least three (3) years of hands-on product development experience
Experience with one or more full product development cycles
Strong working knowledge of analog and digital circuits
Experience with embedded systems
Understanding how to use standard lab equipment to analyze and test electronics
Design for EMC compliance and testing experience
Strong technical writing skills
Willing to work hard, with a driven outlook and a strong desire to succeed as an engineer, as a team, and as a company
An inventive aptitude, balanced with discipline and attention to detail
Above and Beyond Experience and Skills
Microchip, NXP, TI, STM microcontrollers, ARM microprocessors (i.MX or AM families)
PCB design using Altium Designer
Experience with motor control design (DC and stepper)
Experience with hardware system design using sensors (i.e. position, acceleration, pressure, liquid level, temperature)
Developing scripts in Python to automate testing and verification
Design and testing experience for electrical safety compliance for medical devices (IEC 61010 and IEC 60601)
Working within design control requirements of ISO 9000 or ISO 13485 Quality Management Systems
Medical Device Experience (working under FDA cGMP, etc.)
Embedded firmware C/C
