POSITION SUMMARY
-
Provides interpretation, translation, and cultural education to Spanish speaking patients throughout the Elliot Health System (EHS) in an effort to increase patient’s accessibility to high quality medical care and ancillary services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides direct services of verbal interpretation for patients. This may be with a provider, an ancillary staff person, business office, billing department, nurse, or any other staff.
- Provides translation of documents from English to Spanish. This may include forms, handouts, brochures, instructions or other written materials produced by EHS that are deemed necessary by the clinical staff or supervisor to facilitate care or education.
- Assists with phone calls to and from patients who speak Spanish. This includes taking direct incoming phone calls, retuning messages, and making outgoing phone calls as needed to patients at the request of clinical staff. Examples include but are not limited to: lab results, appointments, medications, referrals, patient preps for outpatient procedures, etc.
- Assists with the translation of Spanish to English for any forms the patient may have brought with them to EHS.
- Provides cultural orientation/education to staff if situations occur where a cultural context may need to be taking into consideration to provide the best care for a patient and offers cultural education at least annually to the EHS.
- Coordinates daily activities of the EHS Spanish population by scheduling daily appointments for outpatients as well as providing interpretation of inpatient needs and maintains a record of activity by department and time for interpretation for performance improvement and budgeting opportunities.
- Demonstrates sensitivity to the cultural diversity of the Spanish speaking population.
- Maintains confidentiality of employee, patient, legal, budget and department matters. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with employees, other departments and vendors.
- Maintains current knowledge of Elliot Hospital, Service Line and Department policies, procedures and protocols.
- Maintains knowledge of legal requirements, JCAHO, OSHA and other accrediting and regulating bodies.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Requires the ability to plan and perform diversified duties requiring an extensive knowledge of a particular field and the use of a wide range of procedures.
- Involves the exercise of judgment in the analysis of facts and conditions regarding individual problems or transactions to determine what actions should be taken within the limits of standard practice.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and respond appropriately to unexpected situations.
- Excellent written, verbal communication and social skills; strong organizational skills.
- Ability to operate office equipment including, but not limited to, typewriters, computers, dictation equipment, copy and fax machines.
- Ability to acquire and maintain computer skills on a variety of software packages.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Ability to interact comfortably with all levels of staff within the organization.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Medical terminology courses preferred. Certificate of completion of the Medical Interpreter Training Program required.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of related experience working in a medical interpreter position preferred. Ability to fluently speak English and Spanish required; ability to speak multiple languages preferred. Ability to accurately translate medical terminology (verbal and written required).
