- POSITION SUMMARY
- The practice of sonography is performed by a segment of health care professionals responsible for the administration of high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical purposes. Sonography integrates scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction, and care resulting in diagnostic information. A sonographer performs the ultrasound examination that creates the images needed for diagnosis. A sonographer recognizes conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure and exercises independent professional and ethical judgment.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs sonography procedures based on the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
- Understands and adheres to departmental exam protocols.
- Actively participates in quality control and quality assurance activities.
- Completes annual mandatory education on time.
- Works under the direction of the staff sonographers.
- Serves along with the on duty sonographer as the liaison between patient, licensed practitioner, and other members of the support team.
- Remains sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of the patient through good communication, patient assessment, patient monitoring, and patient care skills.
- Responsible for daily department operations including and not limited to, scheduling patients, helping with patient work flows, turning rooms over, transportation of patients when required to and from the department or other department.
- Perform exams independently that they have been deemed competent on by the Ultrasound Manager or the Advanced Ultrasound Practitioner.
- Work under the general and if required direct supervision of the on duty sonographers, while performing ultrasound exams. Exam protocols, images and worksheets submitted to the radiologist are the responsibility of the registered supervising sonographer.
- REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Demonstrates an understanding of human anatomy, human physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.
- Demonstrates competency in production, use, recognition, and analysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment.
- Use independent, professional, ethical judgment and critical thinking.
- Continually assesses professional performance as a responsible member of the health care team by means of quality improvement and customer service.
- EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE
- Education: Enrollment in an accredited (CAAHEP) educational Sonography program recognized by the ARDMS.
- Experience: Second year in an accredited (CAAHEP) educational Sonography program recognized by the ARDMS.
- Certification/Licensure: Ability to obtain BLS qualification during orientation period and maintain during employment.
