Position Summary
Open-rank Lecturer-track
Department of Mathematics
Indiana University Bloomington
Position: The Department of Mathematics at Indiana University Bloomington invites applications for two open rank lecturer, non-tenure-track positions beginning Fall 2024 with initial 3-year appointment and annual review leading to promotion and long-term contract at lecturer rank and long-term contract at senior lecturer rank. The appointments will be as a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, depending on experience. Candidates will also be considered the role of Assistant Director of General Education Mathematical Modeling (ADGEMM).
Lecturers receive an annual stipend for professional development. There are also opportunities to apply for paid summer teaching and curriculum development work.
Lecturer-track responsibilities: Primary responsibilities will include instruction and support for
instruction. Most of the instruction will be in a diverse set of introductory courses including
precalculus, finite mathematics, and calculus. Instructional support duties will include: a regular
rotation of course coordination, curriculum development, and supporting the professional
growth of graduate and undergraduate student academic appointees. The nominal teaching
load is six courses per academic year. Lecturers receive course releases for coordination and
other administrative service.
ADGEMM responsibilities: Together with the Director of General Education Mathematical
Modeling, Dr. Corrin Clarkson, the ADGEMM will, in addition to the above, lead and support
faculty in course reform and development and in restructuring the introductory mathematics
program. Current projects include creating alternatives to remedial courses, facilitating weekly
professional development lunches for postdocs and lecturers, and developing a new course for
students in the Kelly School of Business.
Department culture: The candidates hired to fill the positions will join a dynamic team of
faculty. This team has significant autonomy to reconceive our approach to introductory
coursework and substantial support for curriculum revision. Instructors are supported through
course coordination, and course coordinators support each other through the Math General
Education Committee. Our faculty also benefit from department supported opportunities for
camaraderie and collaboration. There is daily departmental tea, seasonal departmental parties
and picnics as well as smaller gatherings for board games and walks.
Desired Qualifications: A Ph.D. in the mathematical sciences or mathematics education, earned
by the time of appointment, is strongly preferred. The minimum requirements are a Masters or
MAT degree in mathematics and at least four years’ experience as instructor of record of
mathematics courses in a high school, college, or university setting. A commitment to excellence
in teaching, student success, teamwork, and ongoing improvement is required.
We seek candidates with the courage and curiosity to pursue novel and innovative methods of
thinking and teaching; a commitment to inclusive and student-centered, evidence-based
pedagogy; and the administrative, organizational, and mentoring skills required to interact with
and lead complex teams. We especially value experience working with students from historically
marginalized groups.
