The Network Engineer position reports to the Associate Director of Infrastructure and will install, configure, manage, and troubleshoot the college’s multi-campus routed network infrastructure, data center networks, critical network services, and disaster recovery networking. This is an important role that requires high-level technical skills, and expert knowledge of networking and associated technologies. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES Plan, install, configure, and manage all campus network components as it relates to Layer 3. Design, configure, and manage campus core and distribution networking layers. Build and maintain critical network services such as DNS, DHCP, and NTP. Troubleshoot connection issues between systems on campus. Document campus network topology and fiber plant. Manage data center network environments Design data center network architecture. Deploy and manage firewalls, switches, and routers. Configure and manage BGP peering with content delivery networks and ISPs, and peering between the college’s data center locations. Update network topology and firewall policy to improve reliability and strengthen security. Manage data center cross-connects to ISPs, Boston Internet Exchange, circuits that connect to the Boston campus, and circuits that connect the two data center co-locations. Design, configure, and maintain network architecture for the disaster recovery environment. Configure and monitor IPsec tunnels to remote sites including disaster recovery sites. Manage the DR network site at 300 Bent in Cambridge and the mechanisms needed for failing over campus and data center networks in the event of an outage at our primary data center at 1 Summer. Design, configure, and manage network infrastructure at the disaster recovery site at DFW. Plan, install, configure, and manage various campus network monitoring systems, including monitoring for bandwidth usage, availability, network automation, and health assessment, and system security. Design, build, and maintain a system for monitoring and alerting on bandwidth usage and availability of network devices. Design, build, and maintain a system for assessing deeper-level network health, and assessing and automating configuration compliance. Design, build, and maintain a system for monitoring and alerting on system security on network components, servers, and systems across campus. Serve as backup to the Layer 2 network administrator, server administrator, and security administrator. Manage aspects of the campus Layer 2 network, the wireless infrastructure, network authentication system, Linux and Windows servers, SSL certificate environment, ESXi server virtualization environment, single sign-on authentication environment, and email systems as required. Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to effectively perform job. High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Networking or related field preferred 5-10 years of previous experience in networking required Specialist or professional level certification in Juniper networking equipment or a similar required Certification in Palo Alto firewall configuration and management or similar preferred Certification related to designing and troubleshooting large scale enterprise wireless networks preferred Certification in managing Clearpass or similar software preferred Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail required KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES – May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with the job. Knowledge of Linux and Windows servers, and the ability to troubleshoot network connections on client systems, including Windows, Mac OS, Android, and iOS Knowledge of Splunk and Prometheus or Nagios, or other network monitoring systems Good written communications skills and the ability to create systems documentation Strong technical knowledge and technical support skills Excellent customer service skills Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow through on tasks and requests Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to prioritize tasks Self-starter with excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills Ability to work in high-pressure situations with shifting priorities PHYSICAL ABILITIES – Activities commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job. Exposed to moderate noise level COMPENSATION Starting salary for this position is up to $120,000 annually, commensurate with experience. This position is primarily a hybrid role with mandatory days in the office as needed. The hybrid arrangement will be made upon hire. Candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the Boston campus in order to ensure operational effectiveness.
