Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Provides administrative and clinical supervision to nursing personnel on evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
  • Assesses the overall status of the hospital and plans a course of action for the current shift and the shift immediately to follow.
  • Coordinates nursing activities with the activities of other hospital departments.
  • May assist in preparing nursing services budget.
  • Investigates and provides anticipated expenses for various accounts.
  • Provides input into goals and objectives of nursing services.
  • Periodically meets with other staff members to discuss progress towards their achievement and to develop future courses of action.
  • Assists in developing and revising nursing policies and procedures.
  • Clarifies and interprets hospital and nursing policies and procedures to nursing staff, physicians, patients, visitors, and personnel in various hospital departments.
  • Maintains current manuals on hospital policies and procedures; ensures they are readily available.
  • Assists the Charge Nurse in determining required staff based on patient census and acuity.
  • Assists in reviewing alternative patient assignments when staffing is limited; reassigns staff as necessary to meet changing patient care needs.
  • Assigns float personnel to areas of greatest acuity.
  • Records staffing changes on required forms and schedules.
  • Initiates disciplinary process, as appropriate, during shift.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs, activities, and procedures which ensure the highest quality of patient care outcomes.
  • Reports and investigates significant events such as patient complaints or issues which have legal implications to the appropriate management.
  • Meets personally with family, patients and staff to resolve concerns or difficult situations.
  • Provides appropriate procedural information to patients/families who request living wills, designated power of attorney or donation of anatomical gifts.
  • Provides support and direction in resolving unusual situations.
  • Coordinates and assists in providing care to patients or visitors in emergency situations in non-patient care areas.
  • Initiates nursing rounds at regular intervals to determine changes in patient acuity and nursing unit status.
  • Prepares written documentation of bed placement, acceptance of patients and intervening factors.
  • Evaluates the documentation of incident reports and patient codes.
  • Furnishes a written and verbal report to oncoming supervisory personnel.
  • Posts and reports changes in the operating room schedule.
  • Facilitates the placement of patients on admission, transfer and discharge.
  • Reviews daily shift staffing reports for patient census and acuity.
  • Develops plans for the arrival of patients requiring telemetry or intensive care placement.
  • Assists in coordinating the opening or closing of patient care areas.
  • Reports significant patient information, staff performance, and unit activities directly to the appropriate Nurse Manager or Department Director.
  • Responds to patient codes and coordinates the notification of resource personnel.
  • Provides crisis intervention as needed.
  • Coordinates the direction and physical assistance of all staff involved in heliport operations.
  • Notifies personnel when a disaster plan is to be initiated and provides appropriate direction.
  • Procures emergency medication, equipment, supplies, and services when urgent situations require them.
  • Collects and evaluates data from each nursing unit regarding patient needs, staff performance and unit activities.
  • Assists in preparation of financial reports.
  • Participates in research data collection.
  • Reports to appropriate management and public relations representatives any newsworthy items that may impact the hospital.
  • Assists nursing staff in priority setting, organizing care, and developing leadership skills.
  • Counsels the Charge Nurse regarding difficult or unusual patient/employee situations and assists in determining possible courses of action.
  • Functions as a resource person for new staff and orienting staff to the Charge Nurse role.
  • Identifies staff and patient educational needs based on clinical situations.
  • Assists in developing, conducting and evaluating staff in-services.
  • Assists in planning, conducting, and evaluating orientation for new staff and students.
  • Uses specific bedside situations to teach staff.
  • Provides instruction to staff on nursing research principles.
  • Identifies appropriate research activities or studies.
  • Assists in implementing and evaluating practice modifications based on research.
  • May coordinate or direct staff on appropriate interventions in research protocols.
  • May contribute to the core of nursing knowledge through publication and formal presentations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Must have a valid, active unencumbered Nursing license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board.
  • Five years of Registered Nursing experience of which two years must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
  • BLS and Healthcare Provider certifications required.
  • ACLS may be required for some locations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

(Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:

 

Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock, Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation, Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
