The Schinazi lab and Emory Department of Pediatrics, Laboratory of Biochemical Pharmacology is recruiting a faculty biochemist with a strong virology background focused on small molecules antiviral agents. The ideal PhD candidate will have 15 years’ experience in broad and extensive training in biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, infectious diseases, microbial pathogenesis, molecular biology, and animal models of infectious disease.
Prefer candidate with proven leadership skills, including leading and cooperation with biochemists, virologists, pharmacologists, structural biologists, and medicinal chemists to develop novel antiviral agents. Candidate should have hands-on experience in biochemistry including enzyme purification and characterization, and enzyme kinetic experience, Expertise in nucleoside chemistry and with viral polymerases is essential. Work with mice, rats, monkeys, human blood, cell culture, tissue samples, and experience with multiple viral pathogens and their molecular clones, including HBV, HIV, YFV, Mpox, Dengue, RSV, influenza, SARS-CoV-2, SIV, herpesviruses such as CMV, VZV HSV, and EBV is highly desirable.
The Schinazi lab is a component of the growing Center for ViroScience and Cure and the Laboratory of Biochemical Pharmacology at Emory University’s Department of Pediatrics in Atlanta, GA.
Key responsibilities will include:• Viruses including RSV, Dengue, influenza, HIV-1, HBV, SARS-CoV-2, and Mpox research and data analyses• Preparation and submission of project proposals to secure additional research grant funding in collaboration with internal and/or external investigators• Writing and review of scientific papers/abstracts; publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals• Supervision of a diverse staff including virologists, biochemists and chemists• Mentorship and training of undergraduate, graduate, and technical and doctoral scientists• Data presentation at national and international meetings• Establishment and maintenance of biosafety protocols• Maintaining confidentiality and a high code of ethicsEligible candidates will have:• a PhD in Medicinal chemistry or Biochemistry with additional expertise in Virology, and/or Cell Biology. • Productive career with advanced knowledge of drug discovery and development• Continuous record of publications, including in high-impact journals. • Experience in overseeing teams of researchers in an academic setting and have strong background in biochemistry and drug discovery. Additional expertise in virological, cellular, molecular biology, biophysical, and biochemical techniques would be a plus. • Submission of grants at NIH or other agencies
