Description

JOB DESCRIPTION: The CARE Lab at Emory University is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to engage in the human-centered design of AI systems for care work and community health. The candidate will help undertake mixed-methods research and will support the study, design, and development of AI systems in collaboration with health organizations and clinical collaborators. The position also provides opportunities to work with collaborators globally, with a special focus on reproductive care and mental health. The work may entail teaching techniques to others, training, and supervising research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

Additional Details: The Emory University Department of Biomedical Informatics is recruiting for a post doctorate in the areas of human-AI interaction and health equity. We will consider candidates with strong qualitative and design skills, or experience with fairness, bias, and explainability in machine learning and natural language processing. Prior experience with statistical analysis is preferred. Additionally, prior experience with technology design for care work and maternal and child care, or on the design of conversational agents and predictive tools is highly valued. Working in an interdisciplinary team of researchers, practitioners, and PhD students, this position represents an opportunity to advance an academic career with strong mentorship and collaboration across schools and units.

Candidates are required to have a strong background in at least one of the following areas: Human-Computer Interaction, Information Science, Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, or a related field.

The position will be for one year in the first instance but with a strong likelihood of continuing for a second year based on performance. Candidates for postdoctoral positions are expected to work proactively, participate in research discussions and lab meetings, publish scholarly research papers, and disseminate research results. A strong sense of responsibility to complete research in a timely manner is required.

The Department of Biomedical Informatics is a highly dynamic and multidisciplinary environment that has strengths in bioinformatics, global health informatics, imaging informatics, machine learning, mHealth informatics and signal processing. Our mission is to decolonize the application of AI in medicine, and improve health equity, racial and social justice, data access and research capacity across the globe.

Interested applicants should submit their current CV via the online application form and send a copy with a statement of their career aspirations and interests to azra.ismail [at] emory.edu.
