Position Summary

At Empower, the role of Metrology Manager is vital to our mission of delivering high-quality, innovative medications. In this role, you will oversee and lead the development, implementation, and execution of essential policies, procedures, and disciplines necessary to effectively run our internal metrology lab. This influential position ensures the accuracy and reliability of our equipment.

 

In this dynamic role, you will lead and support all metrology tasks, working collaboratively with maintenance, engineering, and operations to ensure successful instrumentation and calibration projects. Your ability to develop and implement calibration methods and techniques will be essential in maintaining the calibration schedule for all on-site equipment, ensuring everything operates within the required calibration period. By developing and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and work instructions (WIs) you will ensure the highest levels of accuracy and suitability in our processes.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees and leads the metrology department, ensuring the development, implementation, and execution of essential policies, procedures, and disciplines to effectively run the internal metrology lab.
  • Leads and supports all metrology tasks, such as calibrating, updating, repairing, optimizing, and installing existing and new instrumentation.
  • Collaborates with maintenance, engineering, operations, quality, production, and laboratory personnel to drive successful instrumentation and calibration projects, ensuring the evaluation and calibration of critical instruments.
  • Applies expertise in measurement science, mathematics, and electronics to calibrate inspection, measurement, and test equipment.
  • Maintains the calibration schedule for all equipment and instruments on-site, ensuring equipment is/are within the calibration period.
  • Develops calibration methods and techniques based on principles of measurement science, technical analysis of measurement problems, and accuracy and precision requirements.
  • Develops calibration SOPs and WI for equipment.
  • Conducts routine reviews and updates of current SOPs and Work Instructions to ensure suitability and accuracy.
  • Develops Calibration templates in Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) according to Calibration work instructions and Master Specifications.
  • Collaborates with the Preventative Maintenance Coordinator and Engineering to perform regular reviews and internal audits to confirm accuracy of the information in CMMS.
  • Works with contracted services on equipment calibration by developing specification, obtaining quotation, shipping, receiving of the equipment with the initiation of appropriate paperwork for the process.
  • Oversees calibration-related tables, data, and forms in the CMMS software used for data collection, analysis, and reporting. Ensures compliance with relevant standards.
  • Facilitates instrumentation calibration/recertification with external vendors, internal and/or external resources, and local system owners.
  • Assigns recalibration and equipment reverification interval dates based on data and trends to increase or decrease frequency of recalibration and reverification.
  • Supports quality and production systems and equipment by conducting follow-up review with the departments and their needs to maintain consistent operation without impact to business.
  • Removes and rectifies equipment out that is of tolerance. Completes non-conformance reports and works with Quality Assurance and Operation in investigations.
  • Complies with Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), Good Documentation Practices and other local systems, procedures, and instructions.
  • Completes calibration before due date, ensuring budget and schedule are within constraints.
  • Responsible for equipment maintenance, diagnostics and repair in a cGMP regulated environment.
  • Partners with department leadership to evaluate headcount needs of department and participate in recruitment efforts.
  • Mentors and coaches direct reports, providing guidance, support, and feedback to foster professional growth and development.
  • Fosters a culture of collaboration and resourcefulness.
  • Evaluates performance and completes annual performance reviews for direct reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to remain in a stationary position for a significant amount of the workday and frequently use their hands and fingers to handle or feel in order to access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The employee is regularly required to move about the office and around the corporate campus. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.


Knowledge and Skills

  • In-depth understanding of metrology principles, measurement systems, and calibration processes.
  • Knowledge of and ability to conduct calibration, qualification, and provide support of laboratory instrumentation such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Gas chromatography, Ultraviolet-Visible spectrophotometers, and other related analytical and process equipment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Proficient mathematical skills including geometry, algebra, and statistics.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Requires bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience or Associate of Applied Science with 10 years of experience. Military calibration training/experience acceptable.
  • Minimum 3 years in management roles overseeing staff required.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in two or more calibration disciplines, required.
  • Experience with Test, Measurement, and Diagnostic Equipment, Precision measurement equipment laboratory preferred.
  • Experience with developing uncertainty budgets preferred.
  • Pharmaceutical and bio-pharma industry, and/or Aseptic filling experience, preferred.
  • American Society for Quality & Certified Calibration Technician.
