Encore is in search of an energetic Chief Mate, a self-starter with a willingness to work hard, take on significant and multiple responsibilities, and with a dedication towards excellence and achieving results.
Overview
The Chief Mate is responsible for directing mates as required; movement of the dredge swing anchors, making pipe ready for the dredge advance, preparing pipe for the channel crossing, ensuring proper lighting and signage is on the pipeline, removing objects from the suction pipe, and cutter head, changing cables on the dredge to include (swing, spud, and ladder), directing dredge tender boats. They are also responsible for performing the duties prescribed by supervisory personnel. Communicates directives and orders from the Dredge Captain and Deck Captain to the mates.
Essential Functions (This is not all-inclusive)
- Upholds the Company’s commitment to an injury-free workplace; leads and models safe work practices
- Follows all safety rules and regulations as well as all company policies and procedures
- Works safely around machinery; observes and instructs others in proper equipment use; uses/wears all required PPE
- Ensures team members are provided a safe work environment and are knowledgeable of safe work practices and policies Directly supervises the day-to-day engine room operations, crew operations, and maintenance on the dredge
- Ensures the vessel meets all regulatory requirements and is properly prepared for agency inspections Inspects anchor barge before use and reports any deficiencies to the Chief Engineer; inspections will include engine, winches, sheaves, cables, decks, tackle, and deck compartments
- Inspects the safety equipment on the anchor barges, reports findings to the engineer, and makes needed repairs or replacements
- Works under the direction of the Captain and Deck Captain
- Greases fittings on the anchor barge every day and the sheaves at least once per shift
- Keeps anchor barge clean, keeps tools, hoses, extension cords, and trash picked up and in proper place
- Assists outside crew as directed with repairs and maintenance
Minimum Qualifications
- High School degree or equivalent
- Two or more years of experience as Chief Mate
- Excellent safety and mechanical skills
- Ability to assume responsibility, interface, and communicate effectively with others
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position as outlined in the Functional Job Description
- Must be able to successfully pass all pre-employment testing (drug test, fit test) in addition to random drug and alcohol testing
