Encova Insurance, formerly Motorists Insurance and BrickStreet Insurance, has an immediate opening for an experienced Life Underwriter for our Columbus office. This role can work a hybrid work schedule or can work fully remote, hired in any of the states where we do business.
We are seeking an experienced underwriter to join our team. The position is for either an experienced underwriter or a senior underwriter. Title and salary will be based on the candidates underwriting experience and skills. We are located in the city of Columbus, Ohio. The candidate selected can work from home, commute or a combination of the two.
JOB OBJECTIVE:
To review, classify and otherwise underwrite all types of new business applications and policy service benefit changes. Doing so with high quality, efficiency and accuracy while applying sound judgement, underwriting expertise and appropriate risk selection. Adhering to underwriting rules, practices, and state laws. Contact agents, physicians and applicants in regard to medical examinations, unanswered questions and additional information necessary to assess the risk and make an underwriting decision. To approve for issue, decline or rating applications within the limits and guidelines established by the Director of Life Underwriting. Effectively communicate with agents and insureds to ensure customer satisfaction and understanding.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Review new life applications and policy change requests for completeness and accuracy, ensuring underwriting rules, philosophies, laws and practices are followed.
  • Effectively communicate with sales managers, agents and insureds to obtain additional information, share expertise, providing assistance and understanding. Order and review all necessary medical and non-medical requirements necessary to make a sound decision while adhering to underwriting rules, practices, guidelines, delegated authority, and managing underwriting expenses.
  • Apply knowledge and information to appropriately classify risk and determine evidence of insurability while also using sound judgement.
  • Handle all aspects of underwriting, coding, letters, research and communication with consistent high quality and accuracy.
  • Consult with other underwriters, the Director of Underwriting and the medical director as needed.
  • Consistently pay attention to detail, achieve time service goals, and make sound decisions.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide timely turnaround Perform all tasks associated with special projects on an "as needed" basis determined by management.
  • Perform such other duties and responsibilities as may be delegated or assigned by the Director of Life Underwriting.
  • Be a team player, assisting others to handle the oldest work first.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • This position requires a college degree or equivalent business experience.
  • Prefer a minimum of two years of life underwriting experience.
  • Designation or active participation in LOMA, CLU, or FALU is desirable.
  • Learning agile and ability to adapt to changing environments and technology
  • Must have knowledge of medical and non-medical underwriting rules and be able to apply them decisively.
  • Must have an understanding of those physical impairments or conditions which are necessary to properly classify a risk.
  • Must know when to request additional information for risk classification.
  • Must have knowledge of hazards in various occupations, a knowledge of military risks, insurable interests, beneficiary designations, signature requirements, plans of insurance, financial underwriting, business uses of life insurance, and all other pertinent underwriting rules and procedures.
  • Broad understanding of life insurance products and be able to learn and adeptly explain Encova products and policy language..
  • Understand and adhere to all state forms and laws in each state in which the company is licensed to do business.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to communicate professionally is required.
  • Superior customer service skills is a must.
  • Knowledge of state laws regarding life insurance
