What are the responsibilities and job description for the Communications Intern position at End Citizens United?
End Citizens United // Let America Vote Mission: To fix our democracy by getting big money out of politics and protecting the freedom to vote. We will work to end our rigged political system by electing anti-corruption champions, passing meaningful legislative reforms, and elevating these issues in the national conversation. We will work in partnership with these champions to overturn the Citizens United decision, end the unlimited and undisclosed money in politics, and protect and expand the right to vote.
Reports to: Communications Assistant
Position Summary: The Communications Intern will assist the Communications team by conducting research, media monitoring, updating reporter information, and writing and editing press releases. The intern will be an important part of the communications team as we head into the heart of the campaign season for the 2022 midterm elections. Interns will have the opportunity to learn a variety of skills directly from campaign communications professionals while also being involved in a high-quality intern development program. Interns will have unique opportunities to interact directly with and receive professional guidance from all members of the organization and will gain experience in political communications, campaign messaging strategy, and more.
Responsibilities
- Compile daily press clips on top voting rights and campaign finance news
- Closely monitor media for news relevant to ECU // LAV’s work
- Draft and edit press releases
- Manage and compile press lists
- Write weekly report of communications activity
- Other duties as assigned
- Assist ECU // LAV staff by monitoring the front desk and answering the phone on the days you are in the office.
Requirements
- Ability to write in a clear and concise manner under time-sensitive deadlines.
- Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.
- Understanding of, and/or interest in, the political media landscape in Washington and on campaigns.
- Strong research skills.
- A willingness to learn and interest in political communications.
- Passion for electing Democratic candidates committed to getting big money out of politics and protecting the freedom to vote.
- A passion for the issues of campaign finance reform and voting rights
- Live in or relocate to DC, Maryland, or Virginia for the duration of the internship. ECU utilizes a flexible hybrid work-from-home and in-office policy.
Interns will also benefit from the ECU/LAV Intern Educational Program, which supports individuals who are new to the progressive political space by providing skill-building sessions on interviewing and resume and cover letter writing, group informational interviews with staffers in the progressive political space both inside and outside of ECU/LAV, and panels on post-graduate opportunities. Interns will also gain an extensive DC network through connecting with ECU/LAV staff members.

This is a paid position of $16.50/hour with a start date in late August or Early September and a flexible end date. Interns can work up to 35 hours/week. ECU utilizes a flexible hybrid work-from-home and in-office policy. The deadline to apply is July 15, 2022.
