The Role
The Submarine Engineering Advanced Capabilities team is looking for an Engineer Structural 2 to take part in the development of the next Fast-Attack Submarine Program, SSN(X). This is an opportunity to join our growing team to contribute and influence the Navy's future, premier attack submarine. The selected engineer will go oversee several projects, as well as provide guidance and direction to the junior engineering staff. In addition, presentations to NNS senior leadership, Navy, government technical warrant holders and SME's.
Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
Knowledge of submarine requirements in engineering and design of deck structures, foundations, and platform arrangements
The ability to apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts, in the field of structural design and analysis is expected with limited supervision
Experience in working in a collaborative environment integrating the many ship systems at the structural interfaces, with teams of engineers and designers of varying disciplines
Strong communication and technical writing skills
Ability to learn operate older government provided software, i.e. FORTRAN.
