Job Title: Program Coordinator
Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week); some evenings and weekends required
Reports to: Senior Director of Academic Programs and Student Services
Purpose: To advance EEC’s mission, learners, and reputation for leadership in the field of adult education by working on equitable access to tutoring and distance education.
About the English Empowerment Center:
The mission of the English Empowerment Center (EEC) is to teach adults the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English so they can access employment and educational opportunities and more fully and equitably participate in the community. Each year, EEC serves 2000 adult English language learners from 90 different countries who speak over 50 different languages with the help of over 500 volunteers who give more than 20,000 hours of service. EEC is proud to have served over 60,000 students since its establishment.
Primary Duties include:
Supplemental Tutoring
- Arrange for and track in-person and online supplemental tutoring, during and between semesters.
- Supervise volunteer supplemental tutors, coordinating their onboarding and placement and providing instructional support.
- Train volunteers on how to use screening tools and instructional resources for English learners with emerging literacy.
Distance Education
- Raise awareness about other resources for learners to continue their education when they must pause their class attendance.
- Enroll learners in self-paced learning tools, such as Cell-Ed, EnGen, USA Learns, and Northstar Online Learning.
- Conduct periodic check-ins with learners to support their continued use of mobile learning and other distance education tools to achieve their goals.
- Track usage of our distance education licenses and communicate with vendors on related matters.
Program Support
- Ensure accurate and complete data collection and data entry of student services.
- Communicate with learners to advance the quality of their experience and promote continued participation in our programs.
- Assist with scheduling and coordinating BEST Plus testing on Zoom for online classes.
- Assist with class registrations and testing – three times a year.
- Oversee preparation of registration materials.
- Assist with book distribution and mailing for online learners.
- Help prepare program materials for instructors and learners.
Other Duties as Assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
- Demonstrated teaching experience, preferably in adult ESOL or digital literacy.
- Relationship builder; ability to quickly build trust with learners and volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills, with knowledge of plain language principles and skill in clear, precise, and compassionate communication.
- Committed to equity, with knowledge of DEI principles and proactive contributions to equity and inclusion efforts.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.
- Proficiency in using technology for program management (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Salesforce, and Zoom) and for language instruction.
- Experience working with low-income or historically marginalized community groups in a multicultural environment.
- Ability to work evening hours until 7 PM one or two days a week during semesters.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and to collaborate with teams.
- Possess a dependable mode of transportation to help with registrations and classes throughout the Washington, D.C. metro area.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching English to adults with limited or interrupted formal education.
- Bilingual (English/Dari and Pashto, English/Spanish, or English/Vietnamese)
- TESOL Certificate

Staff are responsible for helping with registrations across the Northern Virginia area. Therefore, having a dependable mode of transportation is essential. Applicants should consider this transportation requirement before applying for the position.
Compensation: The position is full-time (40 hours/week), $46,000-$49,000 salary range depending on experience.

EEC full-time employees may telework up to two days a week (as duties allow). EEC also provides paid time off that includes vacation and sick leave and ten national holidays; as well as a hybrid and flexible work schedule.
