The Resource Assistants Program seeks to engage ethnically and racially diverse young professionals in natural resource careers. You must be:

Position Description: 

The Environmental Coordinator Resource Assistant (RA) will monitor species and vegetation alongside various United States Forest Service (USFS) specialists supporting ecological, environmental, botanical, and forestry work. Additionally, the RA will work with USFS partner organizations to develop climate adaptation plans and strategies. Climate change is the most pressing external stressor affecting forests and communities, therefore, the RA will learn more about climate change impacts on vegetation, disturbance regimes, restoration needs, ecosystem services, and engagement with a diverse set of public groups. The work will be performed in an office setting and in the field. The RA will always work with one other person, or as part of small groups.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with environmental compliance analysis on various aspects of climate change, monitoring forest vegetation, and will assist with the development and dissemination of communication content and strategies.

  • Work with USFS staff to monitor the impacts of climate change and disturbance regimes on forest vegetation

  • Collaborate with partners and staff to develop climate adaptation strategies and assist with the development of a climate adaptive post-wildfire forest management plan and strategy

  • Incorporate aspects of climate change into environmental analysis, including carbon analysis, climate impact analysis, and the likely benefits of restoration work

  • Assist with the development of communications content on climate change impacts for various public groups 

 

Qualifications:

Major studies relevant to this position: Environmental Sciences, Environmental Management, Forestry, Communications, Ecology, or Biology

  • A passion for public lands management with an understanding or interest in how climate change is impacting natural resources and public communities, and how to analyze and mitigate those impacts. 

  • Motivation, interest, and ability to learn new concepts and skills with the capacity to work in group settings while being an active participant with good communication skills

  • Desirable experience includes: environmental analysis under state or federal environmental policy (i.e. NEPA); knowledge and experience with climate change projections, climate impacts, and climate adaptation strategies or plans

  • Knowledge and experience in public lands management

  • Knowledge and skills in public communication and outreach

  • knowledge and experience with forest or vegetation ecological principles and applications
