Campground Program Coordinator
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Minimum qualifications for provisional or non-competitive appointment:
Bachelor’s degree, plus one year of specialized experience in the administration of a recreation program or in educational, medical, health, safety or information technology (working as an administrator for a recreation/reservation system or related field); with increasing levels of responsibility.
or
Associate’s degree, plus two years of specialized experience in the administration of a recreation program or in educational, medical, health, safety or information technology (working as an administrator for a recreation/reservation system or related field); with increasing levels of responsibility.
or
Four years of specialized experience in the administration of a recreation program or in educational, medical, health, safety or information technology (working as an administrator for a recreation/reservation system or related field); with increasing levels of responsibility.
Reassignment - Currently in the title of Campgrounds Program Coordinator and an employee of DEC.

Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis.

Participate in the development and assist in the delivery of training for regional campground managers and staff.
Oversee the administration of the Department's two sign shops and production processes.
Participate in the development of new programs and the delivery of Recreation promotional events and special programming projects. Assist in the production of various publications and marketing tools.
Incumbent will assist in administering the First Time Camper Program by camping at various campground throughout the summer. Supervise seasonal staff in this endeavor and assist in the execution of this and other recreational programs.
The incumbent shall have a familiarity and willingness to address technology issues within the program; especially trouble shooting issues and recommending solutions or process improvements for office and field records and transactions.
Participate in the development of new and revised campground guidance to assist campground and regional staff in the proper protocol for operating DEC Campgrounds.
Provide assistance with the development and delivery of divisional health and safety programs; including tracking training records, coordinating training sessions, and distributing new or updated guidance.
Administer and track various program office functions such as facility permits (TRP and peddler), concession contracts, and weekly required paperwork.
The incumbent will also conduct trainings, inspections, supply deliveries and in-field staff support which take place in the campground facilities, that are often located in remote areas of the state. Some locations may be several miles off main roads and may also have seasonal or dirt roads. Some of the support activities may require traversing rough terrain wet boggy areas, down tree limbs, washed out trails and roadways. Staff members may encounter inclement weather and or be required to complete tasks after regular hours into the evenings or on weekends.
