JOB DESCRIPTION – FIRE SAFETY SPECIALIST / STAFF SCIENTIST I - HEALTHCARE EH&E, the Company:

As a representative of EH&E's Healthcare team, a Fire Safety Specialist / Staff Scientist I, is an experienced environmental health and safety professional who will work with one of our healthcare clients in Boston, MA. This role educates, trains, and provides support to hospital operations in the development and execution of consistent fire and life safety programs. This role will provide the environmental health and safety department depth and knowledge in building code and emergency egress compliance, ILSM program elements, construction safety, fire drills, permitting, investigations, fire and life safety inspections with regulatory agencies, and the capability of leading recurring meetings. This role will participate in other various environmental health and safety programs consisting of but not limited to indoor air quality, environmental investigations and sampling, emergency response, risk assessment, accident investigation, developing and tracking fire and life safety incident trends, and developing and managing programs for improving performance primarily related to fire and life safety.

As a member of the environmental health and safety department, this role shares responsibility in ensuring compliance with all safety and environmental programs. This role leads an important safety component within the department, which the client views as critical to its values and mission in providing a safe and compliant work environment enabling the hospital to provide best in class healthcare. This role assists in leading a proactive safety and environmental program and improves the quality of safety and environmental management processes following established regulations, policies, standards, and practices. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Sales & Client Relations:
  • Responsible for maintaining the integrity of the business by presenting a positive, professional, and respectful image to our clients. 
  • Identify potential opportunities for senior staff.
  • Deliver services on projects that meet or exceed client expectations.
  • Regularly consults with members of the Facilities department and fire and compliance specialist personnel on inspection findings and provides appropriate recommendations based on regulatory compliance and best practice guidance.

QA/QC:
  • Participates in and may lead fire and life safety-specific recurring meetings.
  • Conducts and oversees the hospital fire drill program with internal qualified personnel within the department in accordance with federal, state, and local government regulations and agencies’ policies.
  • Collect quality data as well as field data by other project staff.
  • Coordinates and implements programs aimed at mitigation and/or control strategies of fire and life safety vulnerabilities.

Training/Mentoring:
  • Willingness and openness to professional development.
  • Prepares and delivers classroom-based and online EH&S training programs focused primarily in fire and life safety, and may be called upon to deliver training content in other safety-related areas as needed. 
  • Updates written materials with code compliance changes as needed.
  • Conducts follow-up with various stakeholders as needed.

Technical Expertise:
Ability to apply basic scientific principles to EH&E’s work while developing observational ability and functional analytical skills in discipline
Has familiarity with TJC, CMS, and NFPA standards, and has a desire to expand the knowledge base in each.
Performs code compliance risk assessments for work that may alter, buildout or remove portions of healthcare buildings
Conducts environmental monitoring related to leaks and floods to mitigate risk to patient care
Participates as an after-hours emergency responder; has the ability to respond to chemical, biological, and other after-hour emergencies
Utilizes mobile devices to collect inspection information.

Communication and reports:
  • Written and verbal communication skills are essential as you will be contributing to reports.
  • Clearly communicate technical concepts while maintaining context and understanding the audience.

Financial Management: 
  • Be able to work within timelines and report any deviations to this to management.
  • Achieve project profitability goals.

Key Skills:
  • NFPA knowledge and experience, preferably in healthcare of closely related environment. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills. 
  • Driver’s license, occasional travel required.
  • The ability to work well under pressure. 
  • Teamworking skills. 
  • Good analytical skills. 
  • Ability to work independently when required.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Access. 
  • The ability to cope with shift work and unsocial hours, which are at times required.
  • Experience with standard office equipment (computers, phones, and photocopiers).

Education / Training:
  • Bachelor of Science (BS), with fire and life safety experience as a responsibility in past roles.
  • Experience in a fire and life safety-focused role in a healthcare environment; or, at least experience working in a healthcare environment for facilities or safety department with an understanding and familiarity of the importance of this role. 
  • Background working with TJC and NFPA standards, specifically related to building code compliance. 

Professional Certifications & Memberships Preferred:
HAZWOPER CERTIFICATION; DOT/RCRA CERTIFICATION

EXPERIENCE / BACKGROUND / KNOWLEDGE:
  • Must have at least 2-5 years of experience in an EH&S department, preferably in a healthcare environment or closely related field with a strong background in fire and life safety code.
