Job Description: K-8 Counselor
As a K-8 Counselor, you will play a vital role in supporting the emotional, social, and academic well-being of students in the kindergarten through 8th grade levels. You will work closely with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to provide guidance and counseling services that promote a positive and healthy learning environment.
Responsibilities:
- Individual Counseling: Conduct one-on-one counseling sessions with students to address personal, emotional, and academic concerns. Provide support, guidance, and strategies to help students overcome challenges and develop resiliency.
- Group Counseling: Organize and lead group counseling sessions to address common issues faced by students, such as self-esteem, bullying, stress management, and conflict resolution. Foster a safe and inclusive space for students to share their experiences and learn from one another.
- Classroom Presentations: Collaborate with teachers to deliver classroom presentations on topics related to mental health, character development, and social skills. Provide age-appropriate information and engage students in interactive activities to enhance their understanding and promote positive behaviors.
- Crisis Intervention: Respond promptly and effectively, as part of our Mental Health Team, to critical incidents or emergencies involving students. Provide immediate support, assess the situation, and take appropriate action in accordance with established protocols. Communicate with parents, teachers, and administrators to ensure a coordinated response.
- Parent Collaboration: Work closely with parents and guardians to address concerns about their child's well-being and academic progress. Conduct parent workshops, seminars, or support groups to provide guidance on topics such as parenting strategies, adolescent development, and effective communication.
- Referrals and Resource Coordination: Identify students in need of specialized services and make appropriate referrals to external agencies, therapists, or counselors. Collaborate with community organizations and resources to ensure comprehensive support for students and their families.
- Student Advocacy: Serve as an advocate for students, ensuring their needs are met and their voices are heard. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other staff members to develop and implement strategies that promote a positive school climate and support the social-emotional growth of all students.
- Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling sessions, interventions, assessments, and referrals. Adhere to professional and ethical guidelines regarding confidentiality, informed consent, and student privacy.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- State certification or licensure as a school counselor, LCSW, or related certification.
- Strong understanding of child and early adolescent development.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to establish rapport and maintain professional relationships with students, parents, and staff.
- Knowledge of counseling techniques, crisis intervention, and mental health assessment tools.
- Familiarity with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards in school counseling.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural and diverse school community.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in documentation and record-keeping.
