Title: Concrete Roadwork Estimator
Location: Chicago, IL. 60617
Duration of Job: Permanent Direct hire
Estimator with (HCSS) Heavy Bid experience
The person in this role will ultimately be responsible for estimating, proposal development and management specializing in concrete pavement restoration and road construction, assembling complete bid packages and proposals through close-out. This position is also responsible for monitoring and maintaining job costs including purchasing and schedules.
Responsibilities include:
The preferred candidate will Estimate on a daily basis. A B.S. Civil Engineering or Construction Management or the equivalent of 2 years of project management and estimating experience in heavy, highway, i.e. concrete pavement patching and restoration, road construction is preferred.

The person in this role will ultimately be responsible for estimating, proposal development and management specializing in concrete pavement restoration and road construction, assembling complete bid packages and proposals through close-out. This position is also responsible for monitoring and maintaining job costs including purchasing and schedules.
Responsibilities include:
- Monitor bid opportunities and perform customer relationship management
- Develop estimates from various types of bid documents and their key components such as bonding, insurance, indemnification and damage clauses
- Ensure thorough and accurate quantity takeoffs
- Develop construction means and methods, appropriate equipment, material use and applications, crew sizing and crew build-up
- Determine productivity rates and accurately include these estimates in the bid package
- Visit proposed job sites
- Attend pre-bid and job site meetings
- Understand and apply Overhead and General Conditions recovery to support the work.
- Effectively communicate with subcontractors, suppliers, specialty services, and equipment suppliers and ensure scope of work is complete as needed
- Preparation of work schedule
- Successfully negotiate project construction time and penalty clauses
- Innovation and business development on special projects which fall outside the current normal scope of operation for the company to ensure future growth
- Monitor cost controls and schedules on all projects to verify accuracy of bids
- Review cost reports and report any recommendations for change orders

- Knowledge of multi-locality labor agreements and prevailing wages
- Knowledge of multi-state DOT specifications
- Ability to travel for pre-bid conferences, site visits, bid reviews, and other purposes as needed to fully perform the functions of this position
- Superior negotiations skills and the ability to successfully resolve contract issues related to bid packages
- Be able to write clearly and effectively communicate to all persons and organizations involved in the construction process
- Ability to understand and update unit costs and the factors that affect construction cost
- Possess strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate effectively at all levels
- Work to maintain the workload as needed to ensure project bids are timely and complete
- Communicate effectively with company executive management for decisions related to pricing, jobs to bid, personnel needs,etc
- Be proficient in Word, Excel, Outlook. HCSS Heavy Bid experience.
- Transcribe notes from meeting minutes, telephone conversations, and communications from the field
- Train others to perform at acceptable levels on relevant office tasks
