BACKGROUND

Fastmarkets is Euromoney’s commodities price reporting, information and events business. It is experiencing rapid growth across commodity verticals. Its business serves the global metals, minerals forest-products, and agriculture markets. The business also runs events for the agriculture markets (Global Grain). Historically a news-led subscription business, the strategy is to evolve the operation into a pricing-led data business. Fastmarkets encompasses the historic brands of Metal Bulletin, American Metal Market, RISI, FOEX, Random Lengths and AgriCensus. These storied brands, the oldest dating back to 1874, are leading names in commodity pricing in the global metals, mining, and forest product markets.

 

Fastmarkets RISI is the world’s most trusted price reporting and market analysis provider for the forest products sector. Fastmarkets RISI clients comprise more than 97% of the world’s forest products sector, plus the industry’s end-users, suppliers, investors and financial-service providers.

 

Job purpose

This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate eager to lead economic analysis of commodity tissue markets including retail and commercial tissue grades. The Economist, Tissue develops and contributes to regular tissue forecast publications that inform and guide executives with invaluable data and insights. The position takes direct responsibility for managing the analysis, overseeing data collection, developing and producing short and long term forecasts, and coordinating with our overall industry view to provide a coherent picture of supply, demand, costs, pricing and key trends and drivers.

Principal accountabilities

  • Deliver recurring reports and data on commodity tissue markets
  • Ensure timely and accurate delivery of all Fastmarkets RISI tissue services
  • Be responsible for the development of the tissue practice area and forecasting models and methodologies
  • Maintain marketplace contacts to stay abreast of industry developments and market fundamentals
  • Speak and/or represent Fastmarkets RISI as a leading global practitioner at conferences and outside events as requested or identified as value-adding opportunities
  • Communicate with customers regularly to support the sales team, deepen relationships and assist with business development
  • Scope, lead and/or deliver single and multi-client studies on tissue markets
  • Controls input to our products from internal and external contributors to guarantee timely and coherent updates for our customers

Knowledge, experience and skills

  • Master’s degree in economics preferred. Other business degrees with relevant forecasting/ tissue industry analysis work experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of forest products commodity markets and experience/ interest in analysing consumer packaged goods (CPGs) trends will be highly beneficial for the role
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills
  • Confident with presenting to clients and at industry events
  • Capacity to speak on the record to the media about market developments
  • Able to foster and develop relationships in the relevant industry sector                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        
  • Collaborative team player
  • Comprehensive understanding of statistical foundations, particularly with regards to time series data and forecasting.
  • Strong analytical/mathematical/econometric modelling
  • Desire to apply economics analysis to a complex commodity market
  • Appreciation of advanced statistical modelling and forecasting, some exposure to machine learning a plus. Able to critically assess statistical analyses and forecast models and suggest improvements.
