Special Note
This is a full-time, overtime exempt position on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College. This position is an “at-will” appointment, exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements.

Position Purpose
This position is responsible for developing, managing, implementing, and evaluating an annual giving program that raises approximately $500,000 in unrestricted and restricted gifts to achieve Evergreen’s strategic fundraising goals. Utilizing industry best practices and a data-driven approach, the incumbent executes a strategic comprehensive multi-channel annual giving program that includes direct mail, digital, email, social media, leadership giving, giving day, and crowdfunding communication and solicitation tactics. Such efforts will focus on increasing gift revenue and deepening relationships through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of alumni, donors, students, faculty, staff, and friends on behalf of the College and The Evergreen State College Foundation. As a frontline fundraiser, the position manages a portfolio of donors and is responsible for the continued growth of existing and prospective relationships to secure annual charitable support of gifts for Evergreen of $1,000 .

Nature and Scope
This position reports to the Director of Strategic Engagement and works under general supervision as a key advisor on annual giving activities. This position collaborates with senior leaders in Advancement, students, alumni, donors, friends, volunteers, Advancement staff, and units across campus employing industry best practices in utilizing annual giving tactics as cultivation opportunities to meet fundraising and engagement goals. In addition, this position is responsible for identifying and supervising the Annual Giving Officer, volunteers and may supervise the work of student or temporary employees. This position acts as a designee for the Director as needed.

Essential Functions
Leadership

  • Manage the development, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive Annual Giving strategy on a fiscal year basis to raise $500,000 via the Evergreen Fund, Student Emergency Fund, Evergreen Scholarship, Summer Undergraduate Research Fund, Evergreen Tacoma Fund, Annual Faculty Fund, and others with guidance from the Director.
  • Develop, implement, and manage Annual Giving direct mail, email, and phone programs, including setting the strategy in partnership with the Director and providing leadership and guidance to Advancement staff and program partners.
  • Consistently evaluate the success and effectiveness of the Annual Giving program using quantitative and qualitative data (retention, acquisition, etc.), measuring it against the identified purpose and across viable channels (e.g., Raisers Edge, Emma, etc.) and benchmark results against other projects and contribute to strategic planning for future tactics and make recommendations for improvement and/or change.
  • Oversee Annual Giving strategy meetings, including agenda development, facilitation, identifying and assigning action items, and ensuring effective and efficient collaboration to meet objectives.
  • Manage the delivery of Annual Giving goals associated with Evergreen’s comprehensive campaign; collaborate with the Director, Advancement staff, campus partners, and others to identify goals.
  • Deliver activities within a specified budget; coordinate cost analysis, maintain financial documents, reconcile expenses, generate expense reports, and make recommendations about the allocation of resources to the Director.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive index of procedures, services, and tasks associated with planning and conducting annual giving activities.
  • Supervisethe Annual Giving Officer, Annual Giving Campaign Ambassadors, and temporary staff, including hiring, training, motivating, scheduling, evaluating, addressing performance issues, and investing in the development of employees.
  • Handle urgent and last-minute changes with tact and courtesy, ensuring successful coordination and execution of assigned activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Donor Engagement and Stewardship

  • Manage a portfolio of assigned prospects with an emphasis on gifts of $1,000 from identification through cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors face-to-face, by email, by mail, and by phone; work with major giving and alumni relations staff to maximize cultivation opportunities.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate stewardship plans for a growing number of individual donors and for gift funds, including but not limited to, printed and digital communications, scholarship profiles, and broad and custom impact reports and customized stewardship touches.
  • Liaise directly with constituents about giving and the impact of philanthropy as needed.
  • Lead student engagement and visibility for the Art of Giving (gala and scholarship drive), including securing and preparing student speakers and engaging scholarship recipients in the event for cultivation and stewardship purposes in partnership with the Manager of Special Events.
  • Oversee Advancement’s collaboration with students for annual giving activities and identified special events; guide the work of staff as needed.

Marketing and Communications

  • Create well-written and visually compelling communications, including but not limited to, email, direct mail, impact reports, videos, presentations, and other donor-centric materials that focus on fundraising and stewardship objectives; collaborate with Advancement staff and college professionals to ensure efficient production of materials.
  • Develop, edit, and review persuasive and informative copy for a variety of annual giving communications to internal and external audiences; identify and partner with students, staff, faculty, alumni, donors, and others on communications as needed.
  • Continually expand awareness, knowledge, and ability in applying diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethical storytelling practices to marketing and communications work; stay abreast of confidentiality protocols.
  • Incorporate industry best practices for Advancement communications and educate coworkers on best practices.
  • Oversee the Annual Giving communications calendar, including making revisions, ensuring accuracy, and keeping the Director and appropriate staff informed.
  • Generate and manage timelines for communications; work closely with Director to integrate key messaging tailored to audiences in all materials.
  • Develop sophisticated segment approaches with Advancement staff to maximize philanthropic engagement for different constituent groups.
  • Generate lists for communications overseeing submission and review of data requests and partnering with Advancement Services and others to ensure accuracy and that data sets meet identified goals; coordinate review of lists by Development team and report on responses.
  • Oversee competitive bid process and negotiate contracts with vendors for services and costs; ensure compliance with Purchasing Office rules and guidelines and that vendors comply with the provisions of the contract with guidance from the Advancement Marketing and Communications Manager.
  • Maintain an inventory of communications and stewardship materials; develop and manage protocol for archiving and/or creating new collateral in alignment with Advancement and College branding guidelines.

  • Exceptional copywriting and copyediting skills, including the ability to write persuasively for print and online.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to assess and analyze trends from quantitative and qualitative data to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Ability to gather information effectively by means of interviews and/or donor database research for stewardship and other communications purposes.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of college and constituent information.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent education and experience.
  • Progressively responsible experience leading fundraising, development, and/or constituent engagement programs and strategies.
  • One year of individual constituent fundraising experience, preferably in a college or university setting.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in staff hiring, supervision, evaluation, and training.
  • Applicable experience in one or more of the following fields: fundraising/non-profit, alumni or student programs, public relations, or communications.
  • Experience with relational databases (Raisers Edge preferred).

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
