Initial training will be based out of Berlin, CT.
The Line Helper is an entry-level position where an individual will learn to perform work involved in the construction, operation, and maintenance of the electric system. He or she will be acquiring the necessary knowledge and experience required to progress through the established Line Helper steps. Individuals must be able to perform work assignments at the apprentice line worker level including distribution transmission work; work emergency and overtime when the need exists; candidate must demonstrate safe working practices; have the mechanical ability to use hand/power tools, and equipment pertinent to line construction and maintenance; and can climb and work on poles, ladders, and other elevated structures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A high school diploma supplemented by a one-year course in trade school or the equivalent and the ability to climb poles skillfully with Lineman's climbers are required. Individuals must be qualified to hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Candidates must successfully pass the Construction and Skilled Trades Test (CAST) Test and the agility assessment. The position will likely involve shift and weekend hours and on-call assignments. The successful candidate must live within 30 minutes of the reporting location.
Experience:
Must have 2 years of electrical experience. Prior pole climbing experience preferred.
Must have demonstrated ability in overhead electric systems, as evidenced by successfully passing a knowledge-based exam and physical prescreening.
Must pass EEI testing (CAST test) and successful completion of a technical and behavioral interview.
Must have a work history that demonstrates safe work habits.
Licenses & Certifications:
Valid License to Operate Motor Vehicles
Valid CDL Class B Driver’s License preferred
Working Conditions:
Ability and willingness to perform heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in all seasons and at times for extended periods.
Ability to stand a minimum of five to six hours on the ground – may be in a bucket on a line truck or at the top of a distribution pole.
Ability to sit for a minimum of two to three hours – may be driving a truck or sitting in a manhole or an underground vault.
Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment.
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
Ability to push/pull weights up to 75 pounds.
Ability to climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths.
Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat.
Ability to differentiate between colors (color vision).
Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to gain knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools in line construction and maintenance work.
Ability to gain knowledge of the principles of electric theory as applied to electrical circuits and wire systems.
Ability to gain knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of adequate and necessary safety precautions.
Some knowledge of light construction and maintenance equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills

Ability to analyze and solve problems
Ability to observe and interpret situations
Ability to learn and apply new information or new skills
Ability to work under deadlines with constant interruptions
Bargaining unit employees under the TEAL contract will be given first consideration. In addition, this position is being posted internally, and externally, the successful candidate must live within 30 minutes of the reporting location.
