Job Description

With Exelixis’ continued growth and active Business Development & Licensing efforts to support an extensive, fast moving pipeline, the need has been identified to recruit a Senior Director, Commercial Strategy and Planning (Business Development). The position will report to the Senior Director and Head of Commercial Strategy and Planning. This position will be accountable for leading the Business Development (BD) function within CSP, driving BD commercial strategy, and will provide critical information and advice to Exelixis Leadership.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
•    Primarily responsible for leading BD commercial strategy and analysis, including:
o    Commercial due diligence and opportunity assessments for new product opportunities
o    Development of patient-based revenue forecasts
o    Provide commercial perspective on external product opportunities, including market attractiveness, product value proposition, commercial risks and strategic fit
o    Asset screens to identify and prioritize new product opportunities
o    BD-focused competitive intelligence, through conference coverage, earnings call coverage and oncology landscape tracking
o    Planning and executing primary and secondary market research to support commercial opportunity assessment and revenue forecast assumptions
•    Lead team of 2 direct reports to accomplish the above responsibilities
•    Work cross-functionally with Commercial, Clinical Development, Translational Pharmacology, Medical Affairs, Scientific Strategy and Finance functions to generate holistic recommendations
•    Review clinical data for external opportunities and assess competitive positioning and commercial implications
•    Determine the appropriate analyses required to answer key business questions and generate data driven recommendations based on analyses
•    Provide and ensure the interpretation of complex analytical information to include: Primary and Secondary Data, Forecasting, Competitive Intelligence, Scenario Planning, and other relevant sources of information and analysis
•    Develop and oversee execution of US and Global Market Research including management of third parties and budgets associated with this function

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
•    Supervises staff, including hiring, scheduling and assigning work, reviewing performance, and
recommends salary increases, promotions, transfers, demotions, or terminations.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: 

Education:
•    Bachelors degree in related discipline 15 years of related experience; or
•    Masters degree in related discipline and 13 years of related experience; or
•    PhD degree in related discipline and 11 years of related experience; or 
•    Equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Experience/The Ideal Candidate will have:
•    Previous experience in biopharma industry required
•    Previous new product evaluation experience required
•    Previous experience in life sciences strategy consulting or pharma/biotech analytics is highly desirable
•    Prior oncology experience is highly desired with specialty product experience as a minimum

Knowledge/Skills:
•    Expertise in patient-based forecasting and quantitative modeling methodologies
•    Strong understanding of Business Development & Licensing processes for pharma/biotech
•    Ability to influence without authority, and able to clearly represent the commercial perspective to BD, Clinical, Scientific Strategy and other functional partners
•    Ability to effectively balance multiple priorities under pressure and understands when to right size, where appropriate
•    Ability to frame critical business questions, develop data-driven analyses, and provide clear recommendations 
•    Ability to navigate uncertainty and apply structured thinking and decision-making frameworks to complex business questions
•    Demonstrates strong willingness to collaborate and ability to be a strategic thought partner
•    Ability and passion for people management; ability to guide and motivate junior team members to form a high functioning team
•    Effective presentation and communication skills, both verbal and written
•    Excellent organizational, project management and problem-solving skill
•    Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors
•    May also work on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors
•    Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
•    Forms collaborative partnerships with key contacts outside own area of expertise
