Exponent's Polymer Science & Materials Chemistry Practice is currently seeking Analysts to join our consulting staff in our Menlo Park, CA office. The candidates will provide analytical support for consulting efforts targeted at product development, failure analysis, additive and stabilizer formulations, and compositional control as they relate to a range of consumer, industrial, health and environmental applications. The candidate will assist in analytical method development, method validation, and method/instrument troubleshooting. A successful candidate will be comfortable analyzing unknown samples found in or extracted from a variety of material types used across multiple industries such as consumer electronics, wearable electronics, medical device, pharmaceuticals, piping and fluid transport, and others. They will ensure that laboratory work is performed in a safe, time-efficient manner and in compliance with appropriate regulations and lab certifications. Analytical support will be focused on GC-MS and LC-MS but may expand to other chromatography and characterization techniques over time.
Responsibilities for this position include:
- Preparing and analyzing samples, often of/from unknown materials, using GC-MS and LC-MS in a wet chemistry environment with the ability to prioritize sample workload and manage time
- Developing and troubleshooting of GC-MS and LC-MS methods and equipment as well as ensuring scientific integrity and quality of laboratory work performed
- Providing high quality mass spectral data interpretation
- Preparing standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Providing reports and analysis of laboratory test results to support numerous project efforts
- Communicating effective with project managers and colleagues on testing status and problems encountered in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
- Performing routine maintenance, cleaning, calibration, and repair of analytical equipment and general laboratory maintenance and upkeep
- Ensuring accurate calculations and documentation in compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO 17025
Qualifications for this position include:
- Formal degree(s) in Chemistry, with an emphasis on Analytical Chemistry
- Minimum Bachelor’s level degree with at least 4 years post-graduate hands-on analytical laboratory experience using GC-MS and LC-MS
- Minimum 2 years post-graduate hands-on analytical laboratory experience using GC-MS and LC-MS for Master’s degree holders
- Hands-on knowledge of GC-MS and LC-MS instrumentation, method development, and data interpretation
- Knowledge of data acquisition and analysis systems, such as Thermo Chromeleon and Agilent CHEMStation, and Waters UNIFI
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- Ability to work independently, and in a team, in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
- Ability to comply with all safety standards and policies during performance of job functions
- Ability to comply with and maintain an ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 Quality System and support auditing requirements as appropriate
The following experience is considered desirable:
- Experience with additional chromatography and analytical techniques such as GPC/SEC, ICP-MS, and ICP-OES
- Familiarity with FDA, ICH, USP, EP lab quality regulations and procedures
- Analytical experience in GMP/GLP or ISO laboratory, preferably with method development/validation experience
