What are the responsibilities and job description for the Human Behavioral Scientist position at Exponent?
How was a pedestrian struck in broad daylight by a car? Why was someone injured when using a stove they’ve used hundreds of times before? Why did someone fall down the stairs late at night? What could witnesses to these accidents see, and why might they remember things differently? In each of these cases, there was an interaction between the person involved and their capabilities and limitations relative to both their task and the environmental conditions. Apply your expertise in the science of human behavior to analyze these interactions and help investigate how accidents happen in your role as a human factors scientist.
Exponent is currently seeking a Human Behavioral Scientist for our Human Factors Practice in Southern California, working in a hybrid remote environment based out of our Irvine, CA office (estimated 50% in-person). In this role, you will work as part of a team to participate in activities such as reviewing case facts, identifying and reviewing appropriate scientific literature, participating in novel data collection for sponsored studies, and traveling domestically to inspect and document the site of accidents.
You will be responsible for:
- Participating in a range of consulting activities that involve analyzing human perceptual (e.g., visual, auditory), cognitive (e.g., attention, memory, decision-making), and response (e.g., response time, motor execution, motor coordination) capabilities and limitations in accidents and the prevention of accidents
- Working on multi-disciplinary teams
- Providing project management for multiple projects at a given time, including managing budgets and deadlines; managing project teams; and performing support tasks for team members
- Obtaining and reviewing technical data, scientific literature, and standards
- Communicating complex analyses clearly and succinctly to a non-technical audience
- Developing client contacts
You will have the following skills and qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Experimental, Developmental or Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Science, Cognitive Neuroscience, or a related field
- Superior critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Superior oral and written communication skills
- Strong record demonstrating your ability to design behavioral studies using a variety of human subjects and/or database research methods (e.g., survey, experimental, quasi-experimental, case study)
- Experience leading multiple scientific studies from start (i.e., design) to finish (i.e., communicating your results)
- Proficiency in statistics and the use of basic statistics software (e.g., Excel, SPSS, R)
- Teaching experience is a plus
- Computer programming experience (e.g., Matlab, Python) is a plus.
