OVERVIEW:

The AV Lighting Design Specialist for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Inc. is primarily responsible for the design, planning, and installation of theatrical lighting and systems throughout the Museum, including system integration with other applications where needed. The specialist assists with setting up, repairing, and maintaining audio-visual system technology experiences in the museum. The incumbent collaborates with project teams to understand demand and assumes a substantive role in providing recommendations of illumination technology solutions, designs and prototypes. They develop, and supports specialized technology interfaces for exhibits and programs. The specialist is responsible for supporting all DMX building wide systems. The specialist develops and maintains system documentation and provides exceptional customer service to visitors, staff, volunteers, contractors and vendors.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Designs lighting plans utilizing drawings, mock-ups, software, and renderings to assist in the visualization of project concepts that align with project objectives. Project manages lighting project scope, design resources, and deliverables within budget to meet milestones and deadlines.
  2. Recommends, develops, integrates, tests, deploys, and maintains exhibit technology lighting systems and audio-visual system technology. Responsible for the servicing, troubleshooting, installation, and configuration of Museum wide theatrical lighting.
  3. Supports and uses DMX programming for lighting systems as well as utilizes design software for lighting of existing and future galleries. Provides guidance for system automation, operation, and tear down of intermediate to advanced audiovisual systems, audio components, computers, video components, lighting systems, display/projection equipment, and LAN & WLAN networking for AV/Lighting systems.
  4. Performs gallery technology startup, shutdown, and repair. Performs scheduled maintenance and gallery installations.
  5. Consults with exhibit and project teams to design, prototype and develop specialized technology interfaces for exhibits as well as to create plans/drawings to assist in the project visualization. Advises project teams for new gallery lighting technology and options.
  6. Participates in gallery evaluation for technology integration that includes calculating display screen sizes, audio and acoustic requirements and lighting needs.
  7. Acts as an AV Tech for events by installing, setting up, and/or configuring audio mixing consoles, microphones, switchers and amplifiers, as needed.
  8. Coordinates and participates in input and tracking of daily work through the IIT Help Ticketing system for ongoing communication with internal customers. Utilizes existing systems and maintains accurate records of repairs, maintenance, equipment usage and supply usage.
  9. Engages in IT and IP programming and testing of intermediate to advanced audiovisual systems audio components, computers, video components, lighting systems, and display/projection equipment as well as services, troubleshoots, installs and configures audio mixing consoles, microphones, switchers and amplifiers.
  10. At the direction of the manager, provides hardware and software support for gallery and public space PC’s, associated software and peripherals, including installation and troubleshooting. Provides guidelines for automation systems for museum galleries
  11. Assists with vendor and third party repairs of gallery AV, PC’s and associated peripherals. Assists team with property security, storage, transportation and maintenance of all equipment.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in computer technology, engineering, design or a related field preferred.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of the industry and growing awareness of evolving lighting technologies and capabilities. Specialist (CTS) Certification through InfoComm or similar technical education.
  3. Four (4) years of lighting industry experience in similar business environment.
  4. Two (2) years of audio/visual industry experience in a Media department in similar business environment.
  5. Three (3) years of direct related experience in PC help desk support, AV and lighting support of exhibit technology installation and maintenance or theatre industry technology.
  6. Demands high level of attention to detail and the ability to work with and meet strict deadlines.
  7. Ability to effectively work with the diverse and highly skilled team of staff, volunteers and interns.
  8. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings and some holidays.
  9. Must have knowledge and experience regarding the configuration, assembly, and operation of computer, network, industrial and electrical technologies.
  10. Must have excellent logic, analytical, problem resolution, and communication (both written and verbal) skills.
  11. Experience in low voltage service and cable and device termination.
  12. Ability to multitask, prioritize and self-manage under pressure and work with a sense of urgency.

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be able to view computer monitor, reports, manuals, and observe sound and lighting equipment.
  2. Must be able to communicate extensively and effectively via telephone/TDD, face to face conversations and two-way radio.
  3. Requires dexterity and fine motor abilities for extensive use of computer keyboards, various lighting, sound, and control equipment, interactive media and video systems.Ability to engage in the safe use of heavy power tools, electrical instruments, lift operations and light maintenance.
  4. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, negotiating stairs for extended periods of time. Must also be able to bend, kneel, climb, reach and physically lift up to 50 lbs.
  5. Must be able to work in confined spaces and heights. Must be able to tolerate dust in the environment.
