The Advisor, Federal Policy is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with Congressional staff, public policy decision makers, SHRM members, and others to achieve SHRM's strategic public policy objectives on federal HR public policy issues.  Responsibilities Executes comprehensive strategy and initiatives to achieve SHRM’s public policy objectives at the federal level  Establishes and maintains relationships with Congressional staff, federal agency staff, SHRM members, and other stakeholders to advance SHRM’s overall public policy objectives.  Analyze information, facilitate research, solicit input from SHRM panels and volunteers, and draft position papers on HR public policy issues. Executes activities and events to ensure SHRM is the recognized leader on HR public policy issues among interested stakeholders. Prepare oral and written testimony on HR public policy issues before Congressional committees consistent with SHRM’s public policy objectives. Serve, as appropriate, in leadership and other capacities in coalitions with other associations and organizations pursuing HR public policy issues. Creates materials, programming, and activities to educate volunteer leaders and foster member participation in the strategic partnerships, as well as the member advocacy program to support SHRM public policy initiatives. Writes articles for use in SHRM publications and electronic venues to inform and educate SHRM members on SHRM’s strategic partnerships and member advocacy programs. Provides regular updates and reports on strategic partnerships and member advocacy developments to SHRM leaders, members, editorial, public affairs, and government affairs staff. Assists with the development and distribution of Government Affairs communications to the membership on public policy developments, as well as strategic partnerships and member advocacy programs. Other duties as assigned. Requirements Education: Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred Experience: Experience working in Congress, membership association or member-centric organization and knowledge of the legislative, regulatory, and judicial process required.  Preferred: Understanding of HR issues/laws, labor and employment, civil rights, workforce development, tax and benefits, immigration, health care, and workplace flexibility. Experience with federal or state legislatures, executive or agency branches, government relations office, or advocacy work in trade association, campaign, grassroots firm or other organization. Skills and Abilities: Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills, including experience in giving public presentations or speaking activities. Creative approaches to problem solving. Ability to simultaneously coordinate a variety of complex projects and work within activity program deadlines. Ability and interest to travel for business. Proficient in Microsoft (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel).  Knowledge of Social Media tools. Solid customer service commitment: resourceful, diplomatic, team-oriented and sensitive to the needs of members and staff. Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment, while successfully delivering to internal and external customers at all levels in a timely manner. Work Environment Work is regularly performed in a combination of office and conference settings and routinely uses standard office equipment. This job requires occasional travel 0-10%.
