The Fairfax County Health Department is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' equitable access to health services and information. The Health Department is seeking highly motivated, team-oriented Environmental Technicians to work as part of the Division of Environmental Health, in the Disease Carrying Insects Program. This position performs field or lab activities associated with vector-borne disease surveillance and control activities in Fairfax County. Duties may include but are not limited to mosquito and tick sample collection and identification, pesticide application, participation in public education and outreach activities, assisting in investigations and other site evaluations. Environmental Technicians attend regular staff meetings and perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred candidates will have experience and knowledge related to environmental health programs and service areas. Working knowledge of personal computers and ability to use field inspection and/or surveillance equipment. Strong oral communication and customer service skills. Ability to work well in a team environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school or GED issued by a state department of education, with courses in chemistry and/or biology and two years of acceptable laboratory experience.
Certifications and Licenses Required:
Valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to walk, negotiate/traverse sites with unleveled terrain and/or narrow passages; crouch, kneel, bend, reach, stretch, climb ladders, use test equipment, lift and carry instruments and other objects weighing up to 25 pounds, wear personal protective equipment, and operate personal computer. Ability to conduct inspections/investigations in extreme temperature environments. Ability to operate motor vehicle in adverse weather conditions.
Special Requirements:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background investigation, a Child Protective Services (CPS) check and a driving record check, to the satisfaction of the employer.

Multiple positions may be filled from this announcement. Typically work up to 40 hours/week. This position may not exceed 900 hours per calendar year. The following positions may be available to work through early November 2024.
