DEPARTMENT: Office of the Provost

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Pre-Award Administration identifies government grants for relevant faculty and staff across the University, communicates grant opportunities, cultivates relationships with granting agencies, supports grant writers throughout the process, develops proposal templates, facilitates data gathering, and coordinates external grant reviewers and writers. The Director will also have responsibilities involving the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and will work cooperatively with the Director of Post-Award Administration. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S./B.A. Degree
  • Two to five years demonstrated success in grant writing
  • Experience in higher education, non-profit, or government grants office
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills and editing abilities
  • Knowledge of federal and state government granting agencies and programs in the sciences and humanities
  • Evidenced ability to work effectively within strict guidelines and timeframes
  • Capacity to organize and maintain necessary records
  • Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups, including administrators, faculty, staff, and funding agency personnel in designing mutually beneficial proposals and projects
  • Experience with IRB processes

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. or M.A. degree.
  • Experience with a federal agency
  • Background with the natural sciences, engineering, and/or nursing/health studies
  • Experience with professional development related to grant writing for those in higher education settings
  • Experience developing regular communication strategies for grant opportunities and successful grant awards
  • Experience developing and managing multi-site grants

REPORTS TO:  Associate Vice Provost for Scholarly, Creative, and Community Engagement, Office of the Provost

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

To encourage and oversee all government grant requests and proposals.  This involves:

  • providing guidance, assistance, and support services to faculty and administrators in the identification and application of federal and state agencies.
  • acting as a liaison to government granting agencies.
  • reviewing, submitting, and following-up on government grant proposals.
  • developing budgets for grant proposals.
  • developing a network of external grant writers and reviewers, and determining their engagement in the process.
  • representing the University to sponsoring agencies in areas related to the administration and funding of government funded projects.
  • negotiating and accepting federal and state grant awards.

To plan and develop the pre-award grant operation.  This involves:

  • developing and maintaining templates for the institution’s history and profile.
  • coordinating data gathering necessary for grant proposals with existing offices.
  • engaging in processes for setting grants-related policies and procedures.
  • researching funding opportunities using available resources to match opportunities to the interests and goals of various University constituencies.                                             
  • attending and participating in the activities of national, regional, and local professional  organizations.
  • manage various responsibilities pertaining to IRB processes.

To communicate pre-award grant activities to relevant audiences.  This involves:

  • developing and maintaining a comprehensive database of funding opportunities.
  • developing and maintaining relationships with representatives from all Academic divisions to understand scholarly research interests and goals
  • maintain regular communication with granting agencies and University constituencies regarding relevant grant opportunities.

To offer professional development opportunities to relevant audiences.  This involves:

  • identifying and communicating existing opportunities such as workshops or webinars.
  • developing professional development opportunities for University constituencies.
  • conveying relevant publications or other information to relevant audiences.

To coordinate with relevant directors, foundation/corporate grants office, and the advisory committee.  This involves:

  • collaborating with the Director of Post-Award Administration.
  • coordinating regular meetings with director/staff, foundation/corporate grants office representatives, and the advisory committee.
  • creating and implementing a strategic plan for the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs.
  • reporting regularly to the Office of the Provost.

To perform other related duties as requested or dictated by responsibilities.
