JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Family Literacy Specialist
REPORTS TO: Family Literacy / Pre-K Coordinator
SALARY: NC Teacher Salary Schedule
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months with possible extended employment
NATURE OF WORK:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of specialized support functions for the Early Childhood Department by supporting the instructional programming to achieve improved family and child outcomes. Works with teachers of family literacy and pre-k to deliver quality instructional practices that meet all programming goals and requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in creating a literacy environment conducive to effective instruction
- Assist with development and implementation of professional development opportunities
- Work with teachers and staff individually and in collaborative teams to provide practical support on a full range of subjects relevant to the program
- Provide classroom coaching and modeling to staff in the implementation of initiatives
- Coordinate all program components to include community awareness and support, recruitment, retention, collaboration and cooperation of community agencies
- Assist families in overcoming obstacles that prevent school attendance and participation
- Refer families to appropriate community services and provide follow-up
- Participate in community events to promote the program
- Attend meetings and workshops that further enhance the department and program goals
- Advocate for family literacy and inclusive early childhood programs
- Assist classroom staff to provide high quality supportive environments to meet all student’s goals
- Plan with staff to implement a successful parent engagement program
- Assist and advise in developing and implementing site-level systems, events and projects
- Be a positive role model for children, parents, and co-workers
- Participate in program and community family events
- Prepare and maintain files, records, and reports in accordance with local, state and federal regulations and guidelines
- Perform other duties as necessary or requested by the Coordinator
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- BS in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Family and Community Services or a related field
- MA preferred, but not required
- NC teaching license required
- 7-10 years teaching experience preferred
