Summary:
The Teacher Assistant assists with planning and implementing learning experiences that advance children's cognitive, emotional, social, language, and physical development within a safe, healthy learning environment. The Teacher Assistant encourages the involvement of the families and supports the development of relationships between children and their families.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Assists the teacher in all classroom activities, field trips, and outdoor activities, including lesson planning.
  • Assist in instructing and supervising children in classroom activities.
  • Participates in the screening, observation, and documentation of children.
  • Helps supervise at mealtime, eating with the children to encourage good nutrition and proper social skills.
  • Assist in keeping the classroom clean and orderly.
  • Assists in monitoring and recording child outcomes
  • May be required to take charge of the classroom in the Lead Teacher's absence.
  • Assists the teacher in meeting the program’s parent and family involvement needs.
  • Attends all workshops and meetings as requested.
  • Has a complete understanding of DCDEE Licensing requirements.
  • Continuously monitor children to ensure safety and report child abuse and neglect when necessary.
  • Ensure accurate meal counts and attendance and submit on time.
  • Maintains confidential records as federal, state, and local mandates require.
  • Collaborate with Lead Teacher in a manner that will promote a team teaching approach.
  • Participates in workshops, meetings, and community events (e.g., partner meetings, conferences, etc.) to receive and/or present information.
  • Adheres to protocol and procedures for Active Supervision
  • Must adhere to the Code of Conduct at all times.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Compliance and Reporting:
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance by adhering to Agency Policy and Procedures, Administration for Children and Families, and DCDEE North Carolina Day Care rules and regulations.
  • Completes and maintains all necessary documentation to demonstrate compliance with DCDEE and agency expectation
  • Responsible for maintaining training hours as directed by the DCDEE Licensing requirements through Agency pre-service and in-service, workshops, conferences, etc.
Professional Responsibilities:
  • Assist in maintaining the staff/child ratio at all times.
  • Responsible for reporting potential abuse and neglect according to the Child Development Program policy
  • Responsible for adhering to the professional development plan, including renewal of annual credentials (*required for continued employment in this position).
  • Must be able to attend out-of-town conferences and training sessions periodically
  • Maintain professionalism at all times through actions and behaviors
  • Display a friendly and positive attitude towards job duties, parents, children, staff members, and others (visitors, volunteers, community partners), and willingly perform job duties.
  • Communicate effectively by using productive comments, pleasant expressions, and welcoming gestures
  • Must be a team player
Education and Work Experience Requirements:
Minimum: High School Diploma or equivalent and 1-year experience working with children
And Either:
  • Early Childhood diploma or certification and experience working with children and willing to obtain CDA and/or AA in ECE within 12 months after hire date.
  • Completed EDU 119 and experience
Preferred:
  • Child Development Association-CDA Preschool,
  • Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and one year of experience
  • Current driver’s license and car with the ability to travel between various centers and conduct home visits; criminal background clearance; physical examinations, TB test, and COVID-19 vaccination.
  • First Aid/CPR for Preschool and/or Infant/Toddler;
Expected Hours of Work:
  • 8 Hour shift
  • Day
  • Monday to Friday
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to express ideas, concepts, and plans effectively orally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of practices in early childhood growth and development for children.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and using the internet
  • Proficiency in using PC, mobile devices, scanners, copiers, multi-line phone systems, and other office equipment
  • Ability to teach children using evidence-based techniques and methodologies for varied developmental levels, abilities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to write lesson plans and tailor activities to meet individual and group developmental needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, parents, department heads, employees, other community agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams
  • Ability to integrate services to ensure comprehensive service delivery.
  • Understanding and acceptance of regional cultural, religious, and economic differences.
  • Ability to maintain dignity and self-control in stressful situations; objective about personal strengths and limitations
  • Ability to work outside regular business hours to meet Agency needs

  • Must be able to speak clearly and make self-understood while also understanding others using the English language
