Your Role:
Exterior Engineer is responsible for design, release and launch of the exterior components/systems (Fascia, Rockers, Grilles, Spoilers, under body Aero). You will be part of the team that creates and executes world-class exteriors in terms of form, function and luxury. This position will receive supervision from the Manager of Exteriors.
Responsibilities:
- Design of exterior automotive component parts in CATIA V6.
- Develop and execute exterior system requirements for one or more of the component’s listed above.
- Participate with design/styling studio to deliver the optimal balance of form vs. function vs. cost.
- Optimize designs with the appropriate analytical and physical assessments.
- Complete and release exterior components, sub-system and detail designs, utilizing a mix of in-house design and supplier engineering where required (in-house designs are planned for most major commodities).
- Interpret CAE simulation results and integrate recommendations into product design.
- Collaborate with key exterior system and plastic component suppliers and support overall vehicle development milestones and prototype/production build events.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams within Vehicle Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Procurement groups to ensure exterior system manufacturing and assembly feasibility and serviceability.
- Responsible for technical documentation to include DFMEAs, DVP&R’s.
- Responsible to ensure all parts meet all certification, testing and legal requirements.
- Pro-actively root cause engineering and production issues and develop a robust solution.
- Develop and execute component and sub-system design verification plan (DVP&R) using the latest test methods and regulatory standards.
- Meet project milestones by ensuring efficient and balanced distribution of engineering resources to support cross-functional teams where needed.
- Facilitate team activity prioritization by negotiating workload constraints and managing supplier time-lines.
- Demonstrate disciplined leadership qualities guiding fellow team members and suppliers towards FF’s strategic goals.
Basic Qualifications:
- Experience in automotive exterior component and subsystem engineering, demonstrating technical aptitude from concept through release and launch for production.
- Ability to effectively communicate ideas through verbal and/or pictorial means.
- Outstanding component design, packaging, and A-class surface modeling skills using CATIA V6.
- Knowledge in integrating Exterior components including body, closures, wiring, lighting systems, with respect to engineering best practices regarding material selection, attachment methods, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
- B.S. in mechanical engineering with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
- Thorough design, packaging, A-class surface and 3D modeling skills in CATIA V5/V6 (6,000 hours).
- Knowledge of plastics and composites molding techniques and tooling, extrusions, attachment schemes, assembly methodology, and product launch.
- Strong understanding of new and emerging technologies, products, and development methods in order to design a world-class consumer experience
- Automotive passion, specifically for electric vehicles and energy efficiency.
- Work within and without a team to solve difficult design problems with tight timing constraints.
- Flexibility and adaptability to a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
- Able and willing to travel domestically and internationally.
- Previous program management experience.
- Multiple In-plant and/or program and vehicle launch experience
