Job Summary

The Plant Receiving Material Handler & Forklift Operator plays a vital role in maintaining efficient material flow. This essential position involves unloading truckloads of raw materials, verifying quantities, stocking supplies, and delivering materials to production based on verified needs. Additionally, the operator depalletizes, operates a can crusher, and manages waste removal throughout the plant.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Loads, unloads and moves material within or near plant, yard, Distribution Center, or work site onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves by hand.
  • Reads work order or follows oral instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved.
  • Loads materials into trucks and installs strapping, bracing, or padding to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
  • Conveys materials from storage or work sites to designated area.
  • Secures lifting attachments to materials and delivers load to destination.
  • Counts, weighs, and records number of units of material moved or handled on daily production sheet.
  • Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on cases, bales, or other containers.
  • Stacks or assembles materials into bundles and bands bundles together.
  • Clamps sections of portable conveyor together or places conveyor sections on blocks or boxes to facilitate movement of materials or products.
  • Lifts heavy objects by hand or with power hoist, and cleans work area, machines and equipment.
  • Operates industrial truck or electric hoist to assist in loading or moving materials and products.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills And Abilities

  • Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form.
  • Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Able to understand instructions, written and oral communication; and to calculate in all units of measure.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Prolonged periods standing and/or walking.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs at a time.

Education And Experience

  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) or six to twelve months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, as well as operating a forklift all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds and be able to stand/walk for up to 10-12 hours. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Cognitive/Mental Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to comprehend and use basic language, either written or spoken, to communicate simple and complex information, ideas, and information. The employee is also required to use logic to define problems, collect information, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, interpret information, and deal with abstract variables for unique or unfamiliar situations. The employee must use problem-solving skills to formulate and apply appropriate courses of action for routine or familiar situations. The employee may be required to perform numerical operations including basic counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing or more complex quantitative calculations.
  • Work Environment: This position is primarily performed in a warehouse or manufacturing plant with varying degrees of temperatures and noise levels.
