An important message from the hiring supervisor:

Thank you for your interest in the Health Technician position. This is a fantastic opportunity for a great career with benefits you'd be hard pressed to find in the private sector, as well as a high ceiling for professional growth.

I have put together a guideline for candidates to assist with the USAjobs application process. All applications are first reviewed by Consolidated Staffing Unit (CSU) in Grand Prairie Tx, before I ever see them locally. I often find that good candidates don't make it through the CSU review process due to common technicalities. As such we are planning an on-site hiring event to assist you with your application!

The following are some helpful tips for applying through USAjobs.gov:

(1) Resume Format: I highly recommend you DO NOT choose the option to upload your own resume. Instead, utilize the USAjobs "Resume Builder". Unlike the usual one-page, neat, and concise resume style we are all used to, a Federal Government resume should be lengthy and as detailed as possible.

(2)Selective Placement Factor: This position has a mandatory Selective Placement Factor (This can be found in the "Basic Requirements" section of the USAjobs posting). In the event you do not possess the Selective Factor, you will be found ineligible for the position. If you do posses the Selective Factor, you must reflect this in the relevant experience on your resume.

Selective Factor for Health Technician:

  • This position requires the knowledge gained through one or more of the following: a medication administration training program, a certified nursing assistant or medical assistant program which included instruction on medication administration, certified pharmacy technician program, vocational nursing program, or paramedic training program. Evidence of program completion is required. The applicant is required to successfully demonstrate initial competence to administer medications, and on-going competence in administration of medications as required. If the applicant is a licensed vocational nurse, emergency medical technician (EMT- Basic, Intermediate, Advanced), or certified pharmacy technician state licensure or certification (as appropriate) must be maintained.

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as number of hours worked per week) spent in the activities.

(3) Key Verbiage: Consolidated Staffing Unit reviews all resumes utilizing a computer based system prior to review of the full application. In addition to possessing the Selective Factor, the best way to ensure your resume is accepted is to include as much relevant key verbiage as possible as long as it applies to your experience. DO NOT cut and paste, but incorporate whatever applicable language applies to your experience from the Duties section.

For commonly abbreviated words (i.e. ALS, JCAHO), try always to write out the full word the first time it is used with the abbreviation in parentheses, then you can use the abbreviation in all subsequent cases.

(4) Work History: In this portion of your resume, be sure to include start/end dates for EVERY job as well as the hours worked per week (if you don't they will disqualify your application!). Even your job was Per Diem, and you did not consistently work the same hours, just enter an average for hours worked per week.

(5) KSA: - Part of the application process is to answer KSA (Knowledge, Skill, and Ability) questions. The format is to choose the BEST answer as it applies to your experience. There is no wrong answer per say, but the strongest answers are worth the most "points" to help determine if you are on the Best Qualified list. One helpful thing to remember: as long as the answers contain "and/or", and you have done ONE of the tasks listed in the response, you can select that answer..

You can prereview the KSA questions here:

https://jobs.monstergovt.com/bopmp/vacancy/previewVacancyQuestions.hms?orgId=2&jnum=156744

(6) Your Rating: Once your application is submitted you should get a rating: Qualified, Highly Qualified, or Best Qualified. If you are not in the Best Qualified category, this indicates your application is either missing a document, or you did not select the best answers for the KSA questions. If you followed steps 1 through 6 carefully, this should indicate that your need to go back into the applications and re-answer your KSAs. As long the changed answers still apply to you and your experience you can keep doing this until your see "Best Qualified" upon submission.

(7) Updating Application: If you submit your application it is possible edit/update it before the job closes. This applies to re-answering KSA questions. Be sure to go ALL THE WAY through your application and save each page to the end. Also, your resume (weather you use the USAjobs resume builder or upload your own) is not automatically attached to the application. Once you create it in USAjobs (or each time your edit it) you must be sure to (re) attach it to the application. This will make more sense once you are in the midst of the application process.
