Primary Activities and Responsibilities- Conductor :
- Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
- Review instructions from dispatchers and yardmasters, and discuss with other train crew members
- Inspect train and equipment in movement and while stationary
- Receive and transmit information by radio and telephone
- Read and understand bulletins, work orders, timetables, waybills, safety instructions, placards, switch lists and other written material
- Assist and instruct train crews to couple and uncouple cars, and make minor repairs to railcars, including replacing couplers or air brake hoses
- Properly set and release air and hand brakes
- Work with dispatchers and yardmasters to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars
- Monitor railroad track and report defects and obstructions
- Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety
- Comprehend color and / or hand signals and systems
- Quickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions
- Quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to visual symbols, signals and displays (sound, light, picture, etc.)
- Operate track switches
- Perform switching, assembling, and disassembling of trains
- Perform other duties as assigned
Primary Activities and Responsibilities Engineer :
- Responsible for safe and efficient operation of the locomotive while complying with train orders, train signals, and radio communication along with railroad rules and regulations
- Inspect locomotives, freight cars and other equipment to ensure compliance with company & FRA rules
- Utilize hand signals, two-way radios, and other forms of communication to interact with other train crew members, dispatchers, and yardmasters
- Monitor railroad track and report defects and obstructions along with anticipating operational problems
- Diagnose minor malfunctions and perform minor maintenance or servicing activities when mechanical or MOW personnel are unavailable
- Notify proper authorities and prepare reports to explain accidents and delays
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications :
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid Driver's License
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience
- No driving violations involving alcohol or drugs within the past 3 years
- Must be able to judge speed and distance of objects or moving parts
- Capable of walking the length of trains and stepping on / off equipment safely
- Ability make decisions regarding security and the safety of others
- Ability to fulfill requirements for obtaining and maintaining conductor and engineer certification
Preferred Qualifications :
- Associate degree
- Conductor or Engineer Certification
Physical Requirements :
- Medium to heavy work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 80 pounds
- Reach / handle / finger / feel
- Stoop / bend / kneel / crouch / crawl / balance / climb
- Work in cramped, confined, enclosed, or awkward places
- Ride on the outside of rail equipment for long periods of time
- Walk long distances over uneven terrain
- Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity / tracking / inspection
- Must meet color vision requirements as described in the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Regulations
Basic Competencies

- Wear protective equipment including hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses
- Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work.
- Complete annual training and pass safety operating rules examination
- Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and / or alcohol
- Must pass all required assessments
- Must pass a background screening
- May require a post-offer medical examination, including drug and physical capabilities test, as well as hearing and vision screening
Environmental Conditions :
Work outside in all weather conditions.
