Job Summary:

The purpose of this position is to provide assistance needed for a STEM engagement strategy that enables the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) to provide leadership and proactive measures for addressing these initiatives. The appropriate candidate will have the background and expertise to support DOE-NE on tribal-related STEM topics. It is envisioned that the individual will serve as a NE Tribal STEM Advisor and support within DOE, with a focus on the Nuclear Energy Tribal Working Group (NETWG) and facilitating coordination between the other tribal working groups in work related to STEM communications services for various stages of the communications process that support the DOE-NE mission and initiatives and enable public understanding of complex technical, economic, and social issues related to nuclear energy.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assisting in developing an overall NE Tribal STEM Plan strategy that aligns with Administration and DOE goals and in response to NETWG recommendations
  • Working with NE and its tribal constituencies to understand STEM-related needs and actively addressing those needs
  • Traveling to tribes directly related to NE to build relationships and provide support for STEM-related needs
  • Coordinating with the Idaho National Laboratory and other NE sites to provide a concerted effort in STEM with tribal communities
  • Assisting with NETWG's chartered objectives to expand educational opportunities in STEM and related workforce development including further development on the NETWG STEM white paper entitled, "The Nuclear Energy Tribal Working Group (NETWG) White Paper on Gaps in STEM Education and Workforce Development at DOE Laboratories"
  • Working with NE to support the needs of the Tribal Energy Summit, where STEM will be a focused topic of discussion
  • Coordinating with other tribal working groups to address the overall STEM strategy
  • Attending and actively participating in DOE STEM Rising Community of Practice meetings, preparing summaries to brief tribal constituencies of NE
  • Attending and participating in interagency working groups that have a STEM focus and providing recommendations to NE tribal constituencies based on those meetings
  • If a State-Tribal Relations Best Practices Symposium is requested by interested parties at DOE, provide STEM-aligned Administration priorities through Federal STEM Strategic Plan (2018-2023) with interaction of state and tribal interests and action plans
  • Assisting in amplifying efforts to expand information sharing and outreach as it relates to STEM opportunities including communications with tribes and states to increase awareness of and participation in DOE-supported STEM programs in NE
  • Assisting in preparation of and outreach to state legislators and tribal leaders as it relates to STEM careers related to nuclear topics
  • Collaborating with external stakeholders to amplify STEM efforts of tribal communities related to NE
  • Tracking current DOE STEM-related funding impacts at DOE sites on and near impacted tribes
  • Tracking, collecting compiling, and analyzing data on DOE STEM program funding within Indian country
  • Identifying and maintaining communications with DOE staff at each NE site to focus on tribal engagement and collaboration on STEM education and workforce programming
  • Upon request by DOE-NE tribal, state, and state/tribal working groups, assist in their study of and deliberations concerning the STEM topic
  • If appropriate, develop training for DOE-NE staff and contractors and tribal working group members on STEM issues and STEM programming

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • Demonstrated, full working knowledge of tribal-related STEM topics

Work Setting and Environment:

  • It is estimated estimates this task assignment will require forty (160) hours per month, to be completed based on a twelve (12) month effort.
  • The normal duty hours will be 8:00AM - 4:30PM, Monday through Friday, excluding Federal Holidays, with 30 minutes for lunch.
  • Work is to be performed at NE's offices in Germantown, MD, with some travel to Washington, DC and NE field offices (such as the Idaho Operations Office)
  • On-site federal contractors, in federal buildings or on federal lands must comply with CDC guidelines with respect to wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, and other public health measures.
