Join our dynamic team at NOAA, where you'll drive the enhancement of essential environmental and safety programs, ensuring compliance and safety excellence. This role allows you to collaborate with experts, coordinate safety assessments, and develop strategic action plans. Your expertise in environmental health and safety will be crucial in maintaining and advancing our commitment to a safe and sustainable workplace.

This is a hybrid position that will require the employee to work some days at NOAA offices in Boulder, CO. Monday – Friday, normal business hours.

  • Assisting and advising ESRL collateral duty safety and environmental personnel in resolving of site-specific issues related to environmental and safety compliance, and interpretation of the NOAA Safety policies NAO 209-1(NOAA Occupational Safety and Health), NAO 209- 10(NOAA Occupational Safety and Health Manual), and policy 209-19(Lockout Tagout)
  • Documenting efforts and implementation plans/strategies via e-mail, technical reports, and white papers
  • Coordinating NOAA Environmental Compliance and Safety Assessment System (NECSAS) planning
  • Assisting headquarters, ESRL Directors, and others with corrective action plans and a prompt closure of findings
  • Tracking the status of NECSAS findings and preparing reports
  • Maintaining and enhancing NOAA NECSAS findings database
  • Maintaining and enhancing the ESRL Safety and Environmental Compliance Google Pages
  • Preparing appropriate documentation, tools, and information to help ESRL Laboratories develop, maintain and enhance their lab specific environmental and safety programs
  • Supporting NOAA Safety and Environmental Compliance Office environmental and safety efforts
  • Supporting the ESRL Labs in development and implementation of any NOAA/OAR Annual Safety, Environmental, and Sustainability Action Plans
  • Coordinating planning of safety training classes
  • Providing support in development, modification and update of web-based environmental and safety training courses
  • Supporting the maintenance and update of the DSRC Occupant Emergency Plan (OEP)
  • Coordinating with the NOAA Emergency Coordinator on any issues related to OEP and Shelter in Place at the DSRC
  • Evaluating facility projects ensure compliance with applicable safety and environmental regulations (including NEPA, wetlands and watershed)
  • Preparing various reports to include weekly, monthly or quarterly status reports on safety incidents, training, and other safety needs
  • Serving as an active member of the NOAA Boulder Safety Committee
  • Assisting ESRL personnel with procurement of safety equipment for use by ESRL Lab personnel and routine safety items management
  • Bachelor’s degree in a physical science
  • 5 years of experience in the field of environmental, health, and safety (EHS)
  • 3-5 years of experience in environmental and safety program management and implementation
  • Proven experience as a safety officer
  • Knowledge of environmental, safety and occupational health management principles, practices and procedures and regulations and precedent decisions applicable to high-risk activities
  • Practical knowledge of 29 CFR Parts 1910, 1926 and 1960 (OSHA standards); Title 40 CFR, EPA regulations
  • Experience with workplace inspections, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards
  • Outstanding organizational skills and diligent attention to details
  • Knowledge of the practical identification and control techniques used by environmental engineers, industrial hygienists and fire prevention engineers sufficient to coordinate application of environmental, safety & occupational health measures with specialists from these occupations
  • Ability to decipher abstract technical information and write clear concise technical documents and reports
  • Ability to develop and organize information to convey information to a desired audience
  • Ability to communicate with management at various organizational levels
  • A certificate in Occupational Safety and Health in General Industry is desired
