As a member of the School Programs team, the Field Trips Educator’s primary role is to develop from ideation to implementation, field trip experiences for Illinois Pre-K-12th grade students. The Field Trips Educator sits in the Sue Gin Ling Center for Education and Public Programs and reports to the Field Trips Manager. They work closely with the Public Programs team, the Education Program Assistants, other field trips staff, as well as the Visitor Services Department. The position is responsible for the development and implementation of field trip classes, field trip in-gallery experiences, field trip planning with teachers, field trip welcoming process, and supporting all aspects of field trips for all Illinois Pre-K-12th grade student groups that visit the museum on field trips.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Coordinate field trips for Pre-K-12th grade Illinois students
  • Assisting with field trip daily logistics and direct any concerns to appropriate staff
  • Serves as point person for daily programming/activity schedules for the Museum based on school visit details.
  • Assist with coordinating any special requests, classes, guided tours, etc
  • Assist with field trip check-in, lunch, and coat check logistics
  • Work with Education and Public Programs staff and volunteers to coordinate day-to-day logistics for classes or special events
  • Respond to educator emails with information and resources

Planning/Development

  • Develop and facilitate field trip classes for students in Pre-K-12th grade
  • Develop and facilitate in-gallery experiences for students in Pre-K-12th grade
  • Create evaluation methods for classes developed
  • Train Field Trip Facilitators in implementing created content.
  • Work with teachers to help plan their field trip including making personalized schedule documents for field trip groups
  • Create field trip resources for teachers
  • Participate in field trip development meetings offering logistical and creative support to streamline the process and create more field trip opportunities
  • Participate in monthly meetings to discuss any issues, improvements, or changes that might need to occur
  • Use strong communication skills to work with multiple stakeholders within the museum to establish and facilitate field trip procedures

Teaching

  • Teach and facilitate field trip classes and in-gallery experiences for students in Pre-K-12th grade
  • Support with field trip Professional Development for educators.
  • Represent The Field Museum at various field trip promotional opportunities
  • Coordinate field trip evaluations and interpret relevant data.
  • Implement and teach various classes and tours for field trips and student groups
  • Maintain an inventory and order necessary supplies for field trip classes
  • Responsible for interacting with field trip groups throughout the year, including summer
  • Supervise Field Trip Facilitators and their work

Other Duties As Required

  • May require weekend or offsite work on occasion
  • Monitor, care for, maintain, and safely store items, specimens, and materials related to the exhibition and Sue Gin Ling Center for Education and Public Programs
  • Research, learn, and adapt programming and resources as assigned
  • Staff or facilitate other Education programming and activities as assigned
  • Ongoing reading, research, and program development as assigned.
  • Support other Education programming, including but not limited to The Grainger Science Hub, Education and Public Programs Volunteer programming, the PlayLab, School Partnerships, Summer Camps, or other Education and Public Programs programming as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field of education, science, social science, or other related field.
  • 3-5 years of education experience required
  • Experience in Pre-K-12th grade education preferred
  • Demonstrated ability in field trip or event planning
  • Experience working with an education-based non-profit organization or equivalent experience preferred
  • Experience developing and implementing in-person and remote field trip programs that are relevant and responsive to learners’ needs, including inquiry-based experiences for Pre-K-12th grade students and for school communities
  • Experience developing and teaching lessons using the Next Generation Science Standards, C3 Framework for Social Studies Standards, and Common Core required
  • Enjoys working both independently and on a team to collaboratively develop program ideas
  • Flexible mindset in response to the unique circumstances of each field trip school and classroom.
  • English required, and Spanish proficiency is highly preferred (other languages are a plus).

This position works directly with the general public, Pre-K-12th grade students, and Field Museum members, partners, and supporters. Candidates must enjoy welcoming, engaging, and interacting with both individuals and groups of all ages in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must possess the ability to read an audience through formal teaching, stage performance, or equivalent experience. Candidates must enjoy independently hosting and proactively engaging with museum visitors of all ages in a friendly and professional manner.
