Job Description: Special Education Teacher – Preschool Level
Reports to: Program Director
Job Summary:
A NYS Certified teacher who provides specialized instruction to students with disabilities. Responsible for working with children who have disabilities, including cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities, at the preschool level. Teaches disabled preschool children self-care skills and basic literacy and modifies general education curriculum to meet the child's needs.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Teach socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification or positive reinforcement.
- Communicate nonverbally with children to provide them with comfort, encouragement, or positive reinforcement.
- Teach basic skills, such as color, shape, number and letter recognition, personal hygiene, or social skills.
- Design and teach appropriate curricula.
- Prepare instructional materials for students.
- Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, or other professionals to ensure individual education plans (IEPs) and goals are met.
- Teach students personal development skills, such as goal setting, independence, or self-advocacy.
- Modify traditional education curriculum to meet child's needs.
- Assist children with specific learning disabilities, speech or language impairments, emotional disturbance, multiple disabilities, hearing impairments, orthopedic impairments, visual impairments and autism.
- Use various teaching methods to promote learning, including intensive individualized instruction, problem-solving assignments, and small-group work.
- Ensure appropriate accommodations are available in class and when a student needs to complete a task or assignment.
- Provide input and attend CPSE and Annual Review meetings.
- Provide quarterly progress reports for Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student.
- Develop transition plan outlining specific steps to prepare students for Kindergarten.
- Where appropriate, assist general educators adapt curriculum materials and teaching techniques to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
- Maintains an orderly physical environment conducive to optimal growth and development with special regard to health and safety.
- Reports any medical problems and accidents to other staff and to the parents.
- Knows and follows Universal Precautions. Knows and follows proper handwashing procedures.
- Knows procedures for reporting suspected incidents of child abuse and/or neglect.
- Participates in monthly fire drills and knows the primary and secondary evacuation routes.
- Observes the classroom, classroom supply areas, playground area and equipment for hazards and keeps the areas neat and sanitary.
Requirements
Job Requirements:
Physical examination as required.
Must participate in 30 clock hours (over two years) of training through courses or workshops
relating to early childhood education.
Submit to criminal history and sex registry background checks.
Qualifications:
NYS Certified Special Education Teacher; Initial, Professional and/or Permanent
Enrolled in a NYS Certified Special Education Teacher Prep Program and will complete all coursework within 5 years of date of hire.
