What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Professional Academic Advisor: Transfer Services position at Finger Lakes Community College?

 Under the direction of the Director, the Senior Professional Academic Advisor: Transfer (SPAA-T) serves as the primary resource for enrolled students on matters of transfer to other educational institutions. The SPAA- T provides academic and transfer advisement and counseling services as appropriate. The SPAA-T assists students in reaching their goals by helping them gain knowledge of self, as well as awareness of College and community resources to meet their specific needs. The SPAA-T will be responsible for working with a designated caseload of identified students enrolled in a variety of programs. The SPAA-T is responsible for working with these students at their initial registration at the College, informing students of academic support services and strategies available, tracking academic progress, and explaining options to students who are struggling. The SPAA-T will work closely with Academic Success and Access Programs, Community Standards and Counseling, and other existing support services and offices when developing referral plans for student success. The SPAA-T will collaborate with Student Affairs to encourage student engagement in activities. The SPAA-T will coordinate with Director and campus offices to promote transfer services and activities to the community and external public and work closely with other Institutions on any matters involving transfers of students.

Specific Responsibilities:

A.    Academic Advisement

1.    Assist students with career and transfer planning.
2.    Provide academic advisement to students about academic requirements and selection of courses.
3.    Maintain accurate records on each advisee in appropriate systems; evaluate students at the conclusion of each semester to determine status and academic recovery plans (if appropriate).
4.    Interact with the College’s early alert system (Starfish) for assigned caseload.
5.    Perform and interpret degree audits (e.g., working knowledge of transfer credits, etc.)
6.    Understand graduation requirements.
7.    Possess a basic knowledge of financial aid processes, guidelines (SAP) and programs.
8.    Make referrals as necessary to career and transfer services, Academic Success and Access Programs (including Disability Services), Community Standards and Counseling, and other existing support services and offices.
9.    Understand the institution’s interpretation of FERPA rules and the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.
10.    Disseminate information on institutional policies and procedures.
11.    Work collaboratively within Student Affairs to engage students and encourage participation in both curricular and co-curricular activities.
12.    Provide interpretation of the College’s Academic Standards and advise students affected by them.    13.    Work collaboratively with faculty advisors to support students.14. Maintain systematic and frequent contact with advisees.

B.    Transfer Services

1.    Coordinate transfer activities and events for students and promote them to the College community and external public in collaboration with Director.
2.    Provide transfer information to faculty, and colleagues.
3.    Serve as primary point of contact with institutions regarding transfer issues and building transfer relationships.
4.    Coordinate with campus offices and centers to market and promote transfer opportunities (e.g., articulation agreements, joint admissions, etc.) to students.
5.    Coordinate office presentations for faculty on pertinent topics around transfer such as planning, scholarships search, advisement of transferring students and others as needed. 
6.    Provide resources for training on transfer advisement to AACTS staff, faculty and staff advisors.
7.    Maintain accurate information on website related to transfer processes and joint admission.
8.    When Director is unable, represent AACTS in articulation agreement development.
9.    Where applicable, serve as the AACTS subject matter expert on transfer services during New Student Orientation, Admission visitation and other large-scale programming.
C.    Other duties as assigned.

1.     Ability to use computer for extended periods of time.
2.    Will work primarily at the Canandaigua campus, and may travel to the campus centers at scheduled times.
3.    The set work schedule varies daily and includes scheduled daytime, evening and weekend hours at 37.5 hours a week.

Qualifications:

A.    Educational Background: Bachelor of Art or Science degree required in Education, Social Work, Human Services or related field. Master’s degree in related fields mentioned preferred.

B.    Experience: Minimum of four years’ professional experience in academic advising, student support or working with students required, preferably in a community college setting. Minimum of two years focusing on transfer processes preferred. Experience in a community college preferred.

C.    Special Skills: Ability to work with a diverse student population to provide a variety of academic advising, career and transfer advising with knowledge and understanding of student development theory and practice required. Ability to identify academic needs and offer solutions with professional oral and written communications skills, and human relations skills. Excellent organizational skills to maintain accurate records required. Ability work respectfully with confidential information and make referrals as appropriate. Work with Starfish, Retention Solution Software, or other platforms, strongly preferred. MS Office and database management skills required. Familiarity with computerized student information systems required, Ellucian preferred.
