First Parish Church in Beverly, Unitarian Universalist
Job Description: Music Director
First Parish Church in Beverly (FPC) is a vibrant, progressive religious community of 159 members. Founded in 1667, we are located in downtown Beverly, MA and continually seek to marry our rich history with our contemporary lives. As we seek our next Music Director, we carry hope, curiosity, and an eagerness to build the next chapter of our church community.
The Music Program is in transition, as we embrace this interim period following the long tenure of our previous Music Director. We are seeking a leader with vision and experience to build a program that invites transformative, emotionally resonant experiences which help us embody our mission, deepen our spirituality, connect bravely, and engage our world from a place of love.
The Music Director is a part-time position which plans, coordinates, and leads music for our weekly worship service each Sunday. Our 10:30am service of 60-80 people gathers in our historic sanctuary with instrumental music and hymn singing. We regularly include music from our small choir or a soloist. We currently use both our pipe organ and piano, and we seek to incorporate a greater variety of instruments and vocalists, both from within our congregation and as guests.
Our community has long been grounded in “traditional” hymns and classical music. We deeply value these styles, and we are seeking to be more expansive in our repertoire to more fully meet the diverse needs of our congregation. We welcome the regular incorporation of jazz, blues, folk, rock and pop, chanting, and other musical traditions. Our current Interim Music Director is supporting us in expanding our variety to very positive feedback. We are ready to try new things!
People with disabilities, people of color, indigenous people, Hispanic/Latinx, and LGBTQ candidates are encouraged to apply. FPC is committed to developing a diverse and talented staff team. If you are excited about this role, but are unsure whether you meet 100% of the requirements, we encourage you to inquire and/or apply.
Accessibility Our church sanctuary is accessible by ramp and Hale Hall (basement) is accessible by elevator. Our staff offices and meeting rooms are located on these two levels. There are four steps to reach our chancel and pulpit and six steps to reach our choir loft, where the organ pipes are accessed. Our balcony is used primarily for storage and is up a full flight of stairs. We are in the process of updating our sound system to include better access for those in our community who are hard of hearing.
