Job Description
Job Title: SafeGround Site Supervisor
Program: SafeGround Safe Camping, Safe Parking Facilities
Reports To: Program Director, Executive Director
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Revision Date: May 2022
Pay: $18 per hour to start
Full and Part- time shifts available
First Step Communities (FSC) is a Sacramento non-profit with the mission to create interim housing and emergency shelter for people experiencing homelessness. FSC has one opening for a full-time SafeGround Site Supervisor (Evening).
Working as part of a team, the SafeGround Site Supervisor (Evening) will lead the team of SafeGround Shelter Workers who will provide hands-on staffing support for the SafeGround clients. This position will oversee the food service, overnight housing and at times, the exit of homeless guests at the shelter. Responsible for appropriately managing any conflict that is escalated by a Shelter Worker.
Site Location: SafeGround, Any Campus
Work Schedule: Full-time. Monday – Friday 4PM – 12:30AM
Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Specific duties may vary based on the shift. Other duties may be assigned.
- Oversees the direction and monitoring of the clients while at the shelter location.
- Intervenes in any conflict that should arise between clients and shelter workers, where the worker is unable to resolve the issue using approved de-escalation methods.
- At times, oversees the exit of clients from the shelter and distribution of stored belongings.
- Works alongside Shelter Workers as needed to support the shelter.
- Monitors supplies to ensure availability of supplies as needed.
- Regular, predictable attendance is required.
- Ability to get along and work effectively with others.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises Shelter Worker employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; scheduling, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience including a degree in progress.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Previous Supervisory experience preferred.
- Understanding of the homeless population and their unique trauma-based needs.
- Previous work with Transition Aged Youth (TAY) preferred.
- Strong verbal communication and listening skills.
- Ability to exercise extreme patience.
- Must be comfortable working with people and flexible in unpredictable environments.
- Ability to think quickly and respond calmly to stressful/ emergency situations.
Pay Rate: $18 per hour to start
Summary: Working as part of a team, CSAs will monitor and direct the clients in all areas of the campus. CSAs are responsible for keeping safety watch, day and night, and performing conflict resolution should issues arise. The FSC SafeGround is for adults 18 and over and the CSA staff will work mainly as lot attendants at various locations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Specific duties may vary based on location and shift. Other duties may be assigned.
- Monitor and facilitate the transition of guests from the intake lot or parking areas to shelter/cabins to dining (Grove location only), counseling, meeting and/or classroom areas.
- Keep safety watch day and night and lead conflict resolution should issues requiring intervention arise.
- Assist guests when needed.
- Escalate to Management’s attention any observed or suspected abuse and/or neglect of children, disabled individuals, dependent adults and elder/senior citizens.
- Help clients access stored possessions (if any) and process their exit from the facility as required.
- Help clients deposit and collect cell phones for charge (W/X Location Only).
- Receive, process, distribute and store donation items received from the public.
- Assembles and disassembles tents, and facilitates the movement of client belongings from one location to another.
- Performs facility cleaning and maintenance, including camp site cleanup.
- Regular, predictable attendance is required.
- Writes clear and legible daily activity logs and incident reports.
- Ability to get along and work effectively with others.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory duties.

Education and/or Experience: No specific educational requirement; High school diploma and one to three months related experience and/or training preferred.
Language Skills: Independent and effective fluency in the English language. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of a computer or tablet and accompanying applications and software. Knowledge of basic office equipment should include: Internet and email, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A current CA driver’s license and proof of auto insurance are required.
