What are the responsibilities and job description for the Welder/Mechanic position at Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority?
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION:
The purpose of this classification is to perform highly skilled welding in the repair and maintenance of water transmission and storage facilities, using electric arc, and oxyacetylene welding, brazing, heating equipment, and plasma cutter. Employees in this classification design, develop, and execute the fabrication of tools, equipment, and customized devices to enable efficient and speedy performance of job-related functions. Position reports to the Operations Department Area Managers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Coordinates and performs all welding pertaining to distribution and transmission pump station repairs, including the layout, cutting, and fabrication of required structural and pipeline repair.
Plans, designs, and researches information and materials for specific jobs.
Weld according to blueprints, mechanical drawings, and schematics.
SMAW, GMAW and GTAW welds on ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Estimates job costs and computes material needs; prepares material for welding; fabricates from various alloys and shapes the desired end product.
Operates and maintains plasma arc cutting equipment.
Employs common hand tools, measuring devices, and power equipment.
Operates air compressor and pumps as required on transmission line and in pumping stations.
Directs subordinate personnel in the absence of the supervisor.
Establishes maintenance schedules and maintains tools and welding equipment and support vehicles.
Ensures proper shop safety during welding and cutting tasks.
Requisitions materials, shop supplies, and required tools.
Assist in major repairs on distribution and transmission water mains.
Taps transmission lines.
Sets up M.O.T. for work on highways.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Assists distribution, transmission, and all other departments as needed.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintains inventory of materials on hand.
Cleans and organizes work truck and welding shop.
Transports machinery and equipment to other areas.
Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by college level course work or vocational training in welding; supplemented by ten (10) years previous welding experience in both structural and pipe . Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license. Must possess an AWS (or equivalent) welding certification for 2G and 5G positions (certification no older than 5 years, FKAA reserves the right to require recertification within 6 months of hire). Must be able to communicate and comprehend the English language.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) with assistance.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. All tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
