Job Description
The Marina Manager is responsible managing all operations of the marina to provide park visitors with clean, safe and dependable marina facilities that will aid in their enjoyment of Grand Teton National Park.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities/Functions:
- Train, schedule, discipline, directly supervise and delegate work to Assistant Marina Manager and Marina Attendants.
- In the absence of the General Manager and Operations Manager (days off and staggered shifts), function as the manager in charge and make independent management and operational decisions during such absences.
- Maintain positive morale of Marina staff.
- Maintain knowledge of and direct all day-to-day activities involved within the marina departments including sales transactions, cash handling, fueling procedures, boat rental and load-out procedures.
- Keep all areas of the marina in the highest order of cleanliness and safety.
- Respond to emergency situations; evaluate the emergency, determine and take the proper action(s) necessary to resolve the situation; notify the General Manager and Office Manager as needed.
- Assess and order supplies needed for normal operations for boat rentals, marina store, fuel dock and dock maintenance departments according to Green Procurement standards.
- Ensure the entire marina area is kept clean, trash is picked up, debris and anything including driftwood that is washed into the marina area is cleared away as needed.
- Ensure that the marina staff is familiar with and knowledgeable in boat inspections before a park visitor takes a boat out, the renting of boats, cash handling and opening and closing procedures.
- Inspect all boats in the marina following storms and/or high winds and pump out boat bilges when and where necessary.
- Ensure that docks are maintained at proper levels.
- Teach customers proper boating procedures.
- Learn the hazardous areas of Jackson Lake and inform the guests of these areas.
- Provide a high level of customer service throughout the marina operation especially when dealing with park visitors.
- Calmly, effectively, politely and professionally resolve park visitor problems and complaints.
- On daily basis, observe buoy field and move buoys as necessary to maintain appropriate distance between them.
- Record the daily payroll of the marina operation and submit every other week completed payroll to Personnel.
- Accompany National Park Service personnel in inspections of all equipment and operations.
- Keep staff, marina office, and the grounds immediately around the office area clean and neat.
- Responsible for the accuracy of all daily and monthly spreadsheets and reports as required.
- Communicate environmental issues, concerns and/or changes during monthly department operational reviews and/or meetings.
- Conduct monthly marina safety meetings and drills with Marina staff.
- Report any maintenance problems/deficiencies to the General Manager or to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Keep management and maintenance personnel informed of the condition of buoys and buoy hardware; suggest replacement/repair when necessary.
- Work closely with the Signal Mountain Lodge Operations Manager and General Manager and his/her designated representative and communicate regular updates and keep apprised of problems and potential problems.
- Attend required staff meetings.
- Complete detailed, honest performance mid-season and end of the season performance evaluations for staff.
- Review department timesheets for accuracy and turn into HR in a timely manner.
- Check that proper boat rental procedures and speeches are accurately followed by marina staff.
- Conduct all on the job training of marina staff in the operation of all equipment (cash registers, gas pumps, , boats/canoes, etc.) including the departmental specific Safety and Environmental Training in conjunction with Safety and environmental manager.
- Check that any hazardous waste or bio-hazard waste is correctly disposed of properly.
- Check that all products/chemicals used in your department meet SML Green Procurement Standards and that all chemicals are being correctly diluted.
- Ensure that Hazardous Chemical logs are filled out accurately and thoroughly.
- Complete Hazardous Chemical Inventory and keep current.
- Perform Cold Water rescues when needed.
- Ensure that all attendants are trained in SML Risk Management Program, Environmental Program, and Hazard Communication Program and that all policies and procedures are strictly followed.
- Keep rental agreements, orientation forms and all other operational paperwork well stocked and up to date.
- Abide by and enforce all Signal Mountain Lodge and National Park Service rules and laws.
- Abide by and enforce SML Environmental, Health, and Safety Programs policies and procedures are being strictly followed.
- Work cooperatively with coworkers and supervisors.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work.
- Work extra hours if needed during times of staff shortages, times of other scheduling conflicts, or to complete time-sensitive tasks.
- Perform all of the functions of the marina staff as needed.
- Set the standard for the marinas in environmental stewardship.
- Help out in other departments as needed and during slow times.
- Any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Read, write and speak English to communicate with employees and guests and to give and follow instructions.
- Valid driver’s license with good driving record to drive a company vehicle and pull a trailer.
- Knowledge of safe boating operations and good boating and safety skills.
- CPR/First Aid certification or be able to obtain within one year of hire.
- Excellent supervisory/management and training skills.
- Able to accurately operate a cash register, POS systems and credit card machine.
- The ability to work with minimal supervision and be self-motivated.
- Certified as Hazardous Materials Technician or be able to obtain the certification within two years of hire.
- Proficient in Cold Water Rescue techniques or be able to obtain within one year of hire.
- Knowledge of dock construction and anchor placement.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational, time-management and multi-tasking skills.
- Ability to visually recognize hazards, proper buoy locations, safety and repair issues.
- Able to safely drive/operate a boat in all types of weather including very windy and/or stormy conditions.
- Ability to drive and dock all vessels in the fleet.
- Experience in budget development and management.
- Ability to learn all company training materials.
- Proper and accurate money handling and cash counting skills.
- Knowledge of the proper use of fuel equipment.
- Knowledge of the proper use of chemical cleaners, degreasers, oils and additives.
- Knowledge of the proper use of cleaning supplies and proper cleaning techniques.

Physical Requirements to Perform Job Duties:
- Climb stairs and walk on uneven, paved, unpaved and sometimes slippery surfaces.
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including cold and hot weather up to 8 hours at a time.
- Balance/stabilize, stand/remain upright and walk on uneven and moving surfaces (marina docks and boats on water).
- Drive/operate a boat safely at all times including in very windy or stormy conditions.
- Drive/operate a company vehicle/truck safely and tow a trailer.
- Step into and onto boats from docks and back to docks safely and repetitively.
- Stand/remain standing on feet throughout entire shift.
- Kneel, stoop, squat and bend frequently.

Education and/or experience Required to Perform Job Duties:
- Associate’s degree preferred.
- Two years of work experience in guest services, customer service and/or conflict resolution.
- Two years of work experience in the Marina or Boating Industries.
- One year of supervisory and management work experience.
- Previous work experience at Signal Mountain Lodge preferred.
- Experience with driving company vehicles and towing trailers preferred.
- Experience with Cold Water Rescue techniques.
- Boating experience on Jackson Lake preferred
