Data Analyst and Visualization Specialist
The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Bureau of Equitable Health Systems (BEHS) is a bureau in the Division for Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) located at 42-09 28th Street, Long Island City, NY.
Our division is devoted to strengthening the Department’s ability to strategically partner with the NYC health care system to ensure equitable access to and delivery of healthcare and social services to NYC residents. The Primary Care unit within BEHS operates NYC REACH, our provider-facing arm that works with over 2,000 primary care practices, covering over 2 million lives, in underserved neighborhoods in NYC to improve the quality of health care delivery by including value-based care principles, increasing clinical prevention opportunities through implementation of quality improvement initiatives and promoting health by creating opportunities where health care can influence and connect consumers to social support to address the whole person. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Data Analyst and Visualization Specialist will work on the Program Evaluation and Planning team, which leverages multiple data sources, including electronic health record (EHR) and GIS data, to monitor trends in primary care and preventive services delivery in the ambulatory care space; supports technical assistance for providers; and leads data monitoring to engage primary care providers and healthcare organizations in implementing evidence-based strategies.
The Data Analyst and Visualization Specialist will play a central role in leveraging data analytics and visualizations to advise the bureau, as well as our clinical and community-based stakeholders, on planning, implementation and delivery of quality improvement programs geared towards improving the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases, with a focus on underserved communities with unmet social needs. This position will be responsible for conducting analyses on clinical outcomes, healthcare utilization, social needs referral, and population-level census and survey data, and will summarize and visualize findings for grant funders, clinical and community-based stakeholders, and agency leadership.
The Data Analyst and Visualization Specialist should expect a dynamic data environment in which they will be providing reports and insights to guide programmatic and leadership decisions. You will work in one of the most innovative health departments nationally, with many opportunities to utilize your critical thinking skills in this highly impactful role. This position reports to the Director, Primary Care Surveillance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Create and update end-user dashboards utilizing multiple data sources and tailored to a variety of stakeholders, including agency leadership and clinical and community-based partners.
Create data summaries, presentations, reports, and visualizations to meet grant deliverables to funders and inform agency leadership, clinical and community partners on implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
Create high-quality maps to inform program planning and development efforts.
Interface with staff within and across teams at the bureau to gather technical specifications and reporting criteria to meet bureau and program reporting needs.
Conduct data management, diagnostics and data quality assurance using SAS, SQL or R
Participate in team, bureau, agency, and grant meetings, as needed.
Conduct literature reviews, write manuscripts for peer-review publications, white papers and other research summaries or surveillance reports.
Present findings to bureau, divisional and agency leadership, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, or environmental sciences or in public health
Strong statistical programming skills in manipulating and analyzing data using statistical software (SAS and SQL preferred, but experience with R, SPSS, Python, or other statistical or data management software is acceptable)
Experience with data visualization or dashboard software (e.g. Tableau, Data Wrapper)
Experience with mapping software (i.e., ArcGIS, Tableau)
Familiarity with relational databases a plus
Experience analyzing clinical and healthcare data (e.g. EHR, insurance/ Medicaid claims) for the purposes of clinical quality improvement, research or evaluation preferred
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-disciplinary team environment.
Knowledge of epidemiological data analysis, research, and program evaluation methodologies
Willingness to adapt to new data structures and tackle novel problems creatively.
SALARY RANGE
This position is grant funded through September 29, 2028 with an annual salary of 75K

This position will operate in a hybrid work environment (partially remote).
There is a potential for this position to transition to DOHMH, for which eligibility requirements include NYC residency.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT
