GENERAL DUTIES:
The Accountant I is responsible for various bank and general ledger reconciliations; analyzing, reconciling, and entering data for non-appropriated University funds; creating and entering various journal entries for interest, payroll, budget, investment transactions and / or other adjustments; overseeing the receiving of all payments made to the University from University Departments and external sources; record, reconcile, and assist in reporting on sources of financial aid; performing petty cash counts and examining department controls and processes; assisting in quarterly and fiscal year closing, auditing and budgeting processes; creating financial reports using Microsoft Excel and the Argos reporting software.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform various bank and general ledger reconciliations and prepare related journal entries for multiple accounts using the Ellucian Higher Education Banner software.
- Perform daily reconciliation of Touchnet payments to the Banner system including payments from the Slate & ABC payment platforms.
- Coordinate payments from ABC regarding Continuing Ed. course registrations to be posted by Student Accounts.
- Perform petty cash audits for departments and examine University department controls and processes. Prepare reconciliations for review and obtain appropriate signatures from department supervisors.
- Place stop payments for Vendor University checks at the Bank requested by Accounts Payable and communicate the status with them.
- Reconcile manual checks in Banner.
- Reconcile NelNet, (previously TMS) payments via bank and Student Accounts processing.
- Review, monitor and reconcile University miscellaneous billings & Commission Payments.
- Review admissions refund requests and authorize processing of refunds.
- Monitor activity in the General Funds account to be posted by Student Accounts/Revenue Accountant/various departments
- Verify the Revenue Accountant's cash & check deposits for the bank and verify deposit receipts from the bank after deposit is made.
- Analyze Advancement cashiering sessions and enter adjustment entries in the system as necessary. Coordinate and review Advancement office cashier sessions, deposits and feeds to finance as well as review Foundation billings and reconcile the "due from" foundation account.
- Communicate with and assist University departments through email and telephone in accounting, budgeting and other financial matters.
- Create financial reports for management using Microsoft Excel and the Argos reporting software; coordinate and / or scan documents using the Banner Xtender module.
- Assist in monthly and fiscal year-end closing processes and compile information needed for audits.
- Recommend and implement the usage of workflows to aid in the financial process.
- Act as the backup in absence of the Revenue Accountant. Duties consist of writing cash receipts, write up deposit slips, enter transactions in Banner and reviewing and finalizing cashier sessions. performing bank transactions such as cash deposits, check remote deposits, and other bank transactions as required at the university's local bank branch.
- Attend trainings as required.
- Assist in all areas of the Business Office as needed; Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Assist in the implementation of new technologies to improve administrative processes; assist in the drafting, revising, improving, documenting, and implementation of policies, procedures, and internal control processes. Review accounting procedures, reports, etc. for accuracy, update, and corrections and for recommending changes or improvements in university accounting procedures or operations.
- Other duties as assigned to support Fiscal Affairs' functions.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work schedule is Monday- Friday, 8:45am-5:00pm.
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting or auditing, or (B) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional experience in accounting or auditing, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required (A) experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for the required (A) experience.*
II. Successfully completed education in accounting or business administration in a recognized business school or school of accounting may be substituted for the required (A) experience on the basis of one year of such education above the high school level or six (6) months of the required (A) experience.*

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to think and work independently and in a team setting, to be detail oriented, meet deadlines and willing to learn new computer applications.
- Excellent analytical, data entry, organizational, and oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively and professionally with faculty, staff and vendors
- Bi-lingual in English and Portuguese and / or Spanish.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position in the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) bargaining unit with a title of Accountant I. The bi-weekly pay rate is $1,707.31 (grade 15, step 1).
