Summary  Manage Inter-Library loans, cataloging, and technical services area of the library

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Processes all inter-library loan requests, both those from other institutions & those from FHU.
  • ILL processing often includes packaging and sending loans to suppliers and/or requestors.
  • Maintains all ILL statistics & contacts customers who have requested ILL material.
  • Reviews records to compile list of overdue ILL books, and issues overdue notices to borrowers.
  • Cataloging tasks include selecting, downloading, and verifying bibliographic records from national and local databases (i.e., copy cataloging).
  • Work in the catalog system also involves updating the status of items, reclassification, and withdrawal of material.
  • Checks orders for new materials against existing collection, and prepares and expedites ordering.
  • Receives new book acquisitions: unboxing shipments, checking orders for accuracy & inspecting condition of items shipped.
  • Prepares new materials for circulation, including property stamping, security stripping, laminating, book jacketing, and barcoding.
  • Assists at the main front desk: checking out materials, answering general inquiries.
  • Opens the library on a regular basis.

Education and/or Experience   

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills   

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills   

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability   

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills   

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of: Cloud-based library management applications or other automated library systems; Microsoft Office applications.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is routinely required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Requires varying degrees of strength and stamina, depending on the task. Must be able to shift large quantities of books and push heavy carts to different locations. Must be able to life a maximum of 25 lbs. Must be able to sustain workflow at computer workstation over an extended period of time.

Work Environment  

The majority of time on the job will be spent in an office setting, with minimal interaction with the public. Regular shifts at the library front desk will involve face-to-face involvement with library customers.
