Our School
French American International is a PK-12 independent school in San Francisco. Founded in

The Exploration Class Program
GOAL OF EXPLORATION CLASSES:
Exploration classes are centered around the pleasure of learning and are intended to challenge
our students' curiosity, without the constraints of the official curriculum: no grades, no
homework, and you decide what is being taught! Exploration classes offer risk-free experiences
so that students can discover something new, engage in project-based activities and be active
learners.
STUDENTS' INTERESTS:
- Last year's student survey has indicated strong interest for topics including music, art,
economics, 3rd language support, yoga, basketball, sewing, photography, soccer, writing in
English, basketball, and magic/card tricks.
- Students have also indicated interest in Speech & Debate, Visual Arts, Tech Team, Rock Band,
Creative Writing in French, Business, Cooking, and more!
STRUCTURE OF EXPLORATION CLASS PROGRAM:
- Students may choose between Exploration classes, the Arts Program, Study Time or Athletic
practice (if they are on a MS Jaguar team)
- 6th and 7th graders are required to sign up for at least two classes each trimester
- 8th graders are required to sign up for at least one class each trimester
- Exploration classes take place from 2:45pm to 3:30pm, Tuesday-Friday (8th grade: Tuesday
through Thursday)
- Classes are offered on a trimester basis (10-week long) to offer longer sessions and minimize
conflicts with Athletics
- Any given class meets once a week for ten weeks
- Teachers may offer two different classes each week
- Minimum enrollment to offer the class is 6 students
- Classes cannot be sequential (e.g. beginner during trim.1, intermediate during trim.2, etc) so
as to allow students to join a class during 2nd or 3rd trimester
- Students are required to attend the entire session for which they have signed up
COMPENSATION OF EXPLORATION CLASSES:
Upper school faculty compensation (based on average supplementary hour payment)
- Two different classes offered all three trimesters (30 weeks): $4,250
- One class offered all three trimesters (30 weeks): $2,125
- One class offered during one trimester (10 weeks): $710
Non-staff members (based on hourly rate of $43.75)
- Two different classes offered all three trimesters (30 weeks): $2,625
- One class offered all three trimesters (30 weeks): $1,312.50
- One class offered during one trimester (10 weeks): $437.50
Administrative staff are not compensated for Exploration Classes.
