Department: School of Humanities, Religion, and Social Sciences (Division of Visual & Performing Arts)
Status: 9-month faculty appointment
Time commitment: Full-time, with faculty rank; tenure track
Start date: July 1, 2022. Applications will be reviewed beginning in November 2021, and an appointment made as soon as a suitable candidate is discerned.
Background
FPU is in search of a musicologist who can teach the core academic courses for the music major and oversee general education courses in music (Main Campus, Degree Completion, & Online). Excellence in choral music has been a tradition at Fresno Pacific University since its inception in 1944 and remains the heart of the music program today. Choral groups perform in churches, festivals, and schools. The music department offers a well-rounded curriculum for students in performance, composition, music education and music & worship ministry.
Role
- Develop and teach 2-year music theory survey on a yearly basis.
- Develop and teach 2-year music history survey on a bi-yearly basis.
- Coordinate and teach general education courses in music, both online and in person.
- Teach courses in additional areas of specialization (music education, music performance, music and worship, composition, conducting, opera, and/or others).
- Advise music majors and minors as well as mentor general education students.
- Participate in the music performance program, including grading student juries and overseeing student recitals.
- Develop interdisciplinary activities and events and help develop the music department’s presence on campus.
- Coordinate music department events, such as the Pacific Artist Series and the Summer Music Camp.
- Recruit students into the music program.
- Nurture relationships with high school and community college students, and churches in the Fresno area and wider Central Valley.
- Participate in scholarly activities.
- Participate in departmental and university activities.
- Participate in service to the community.
Qualifications
Required
- Earned doctorate in Music.
- Record of scholarly achievement.
- Experience in college-level teaching with demonstrated excellence in the areas of music history, music theory, and general education.
- Ability to work with students, staff, and faculty in a collegial environment.
- Ability to teach and work with persons of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Commitment to the Christian faith and the University’s mission of Christ-centered teaching and learning, and involvement in a local Fresno-area church.
Preferred
- Candidates with a broad knowledge base and multiple fields of expertise.
- Experience with academic administrative leadership.
- Familiarity with or involvement in Anabaptist-Mennonite, Believer’s Church traditions.
- Bilingual with the ability to speak and teach, preferably in Spanish and English.
Compensation
Dependent on qualifications and experience and paid out over 12 months. Full-time benefits include insurance (medical, vision, dental, LTD), retirement (TIAA).
